Best Italian?

It's my birthday. We didn't know the bf was going to be off early tonight until yesterday. I'm wanting Italian tonight. Suggestions?

Thanks. Yeah, those are pretty much the ones that came to my mind. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the chain restaurants. They are certainly fine, but I guess I'm looking for something more real. We went to Come Back Inn a couple of months ago and really liked it. I'll have to look at some of the locals you listed.

I highly recommend the Risotto Fattoria.

Unlike Ed, I can't narrow it down to one reccomendation. My favorites are Linguini Frutti di Mare, Raviolo Vodka, and Saltimbocca. If the budget will allow, the Osso Buco Milanese is without equal in this city (IMHO).

Volare!

We were there last night. This is in our top three fav restaurants in Louisville. We always have Leo as our server, he's amazing and professional. Their bartender makes the BEST dirty martini in town, not too salty, no vermouth, bleu cheese stuffed olives. And every time I go I still haven't dented the dishes that I want to eventually try, which is an amazing feat.

I liked Vincenzos, but it certainly is "old world" in flavor and ambiance. I'm close to sixty and felt very young and dashing dining at Vincenzos.

Vincenzo's was THE four-star Italian dining experience in Louisville for many, many years. It's still good. But I would give the edge to Volare now, particularly after the horrible experience of losing Primo over the winter. <sob!>

That's why I asked about budget. Volare is your best choice if you want fine Italian food and a romantic, upscale ambience. If you are looking for something a little more relaxed ( and less pricy), with very good food, I'd go with Porcini.

I lament the loss of Primo every week. I'll share a sniffle with you.

And for a smaller budget - Le Gallo Rosso on Bardstown Road.

I'd have to say Volare would be my first choice because of food and atmosphere with Porcini being a close second. I personally think that Vencenzos is overrated and somewhat stuffy. It's actually a restaurant we no longer consider when booking to go out. I definitely agree that I don't like most of the chain Italian restaurants the only exception being Carabas which I think has decent food in a nice atmosphere.
