Food Fun for Kids

by Kim H » Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:40 pm

We are watching our friends' kids this Friday evening, and I would like to take them to do something fun. They are both girls, one 10 the other 8. We're trying to plan a fun evening with them, but don't have kids of our own, and are totally open to suggestions. Are there any particular restaurants that would be fun for kids of that age? We thought about cooking with them, and haven't ruled that out, but I thought if there's a fun, kid-friendly type restaurant we could take them to, that would be kinda cool. Any suggestions for activities? What's going on at the Science Center, and how late are they open? I haven't received my 'weekended' yet this week, and am not used to searching for kid-type stuff. TIA!

LOL! That was the one place I suggested, and their mom said they'd absolutely love that! We were thinking that even if we did that for entertainment, we might still eat somewhere else. I'm also a little concerned about the overgrown drinking children who will probably be there on a Friday night, but it's still on our radar. Thanks for the suggestion!

How about bowling? Kingpin Lanes in J-Town is lots of fun (they have bumpers and even ramps) for the younger crowd and just as good finger and fun food as Incredible Daves.

Or if you do cook at home, consider going out for dessert. I took my niece and nephew (3 and 10) out one night to Sweet Surrender after cooking at home and they were entralled with all the different cakes and treets that they had that it took 15 minutes to choose. b

What about taking them to one of the Japanese Hibachi style restaurants. When our kids were younger they loved the 'show' of the chef. They even ate their vegetables are seeing them cooked in front of them. Just a thought.......

I'd hate to be the only one to suggest it, but Gattiland is the place to go. All you can eat, and a million games. Admittedly I still go there on occasion to pig out and watch cartoons on the big screen.

Thanks you all for the suggestions! I loved the idea of the Japanese Hibachi - I loved that as a kid when we first tried it in South Carolina. I'm not sure what restaurants of this type are still around, though. Is Fuji still in Springhurst? I also like the bowling idea, but my husband has a bad back, so that would leave him out of the fun. I'm thinking it's between Gatti's or Incredible Dave's. Maybe if we get to Dave's early enough, there won't be so many drunks there? Thoughts?

There's Shogun on the corner of Taylorsville and Hurstbourne.
Also, there is the place that moved into the old Napa River. Their name escapes me right now. Micado, I think?

Oh, and isn't there a Sapporo too, somewhere?

Thanks, Beth! I forgot all about Shogun, and I saw the new place from the expressway where Napa used to be. Forgot about that place too. I love Sapporo for their sushi, but in general, think it might be a little pricey to take kids. I'll have to re-think the Shogun thing, though. Sounds like so much fun for them, but I just hung up with their mom, and we had kind of decided on Inc Dave's for convenience/entertainment. But I'm thinking that Shogun would be fun for another visit. They're great girls, and open to new experiences, and think they would love that! Thanks again!

I'd second Lori's suggestion. Kids always love the Hibachi -style cooking. Between ages 6 and 10 that was hands-down my daughter's fav and we had several B-day dinners there. For 8 and 10 year old girls, it also feels like going to some place grown-up for dinner, which they will most likely love ( they could even get dressed up a bit if they want.)

Just read your latest post- the new place is Mikato at Dupont Circle.

You have to pay me to go to Gattiland... just can't handle the mayhem  I'm dreading another round of Gattiland/ Chuckie Cheese birthdays now that my youngest is hitting school B-day party age...

Hey Adam, can you be hired for child-tending at Gattiland?

LMAO! Honestly they'd need to tend to me. I've been known to spend 2-3 hours there, give me video games and cartoons and pizza and I fall into some sort of time warp.

I've heard that Mikato's is fantastic, though I hadn't made it there yet. I had a lot of issues with the cleanliness of Shogun. And it's not cheap..just my husband and I were about $50 and neither one of us had alcohol.
I really like the place in the Shelbyville Road Plaza called Sakura Blue (at least I think that's the name). it's a little small, but the food has been great everytime I've gone. Fuji on Shelbyville road in Middletown is pretty good too!
