Do any of the churches around here serve pierogi during lent??? I love the fried fish and all but I REALLY loved getting pierogi's every Friday back home! Where (if anywhere) can I get my fix?

The Star International Market on Taylorsville Rd in J-town has a nice selection of frozen Russian and Eastern Euro style raviolis and pierogies as well.

I'm hard pressed to know of any churches that serve them during lent...You might try calling the orthodox congregations.

Int'l Star is a great grocery for Eastern European foodstuffs. I really like the goats milk cheese. So rich, so mellow. They also carry cards, calendars, matryoshka, etc.

My grandfather used to make pierogi for us when we were kids. Although he was born in the United States, his parents were from Poland and emigrated to NYC just before World War I. The Mrs. T's variety aren't bad with some butter and diced onions, although his were much larger. He'd spend all day making a big batch and we'd freeze the leftovers to heat up in the frying pan.
There's a restaurant called Little Poland on Second Ave. in the East Village in New York. It's a hole-in-the-wall diner but you'd think you died and went to pierogi heaven.

My ex mother-in-law was Ukrainian and made massive batches of pierogi every weekend, along with massive batches of a lot of other stuff, and wow. The cheese-filled with fried onions were to die for. It's the only thing I miss about my first marriage,... my mother-in-laws cooking and baking.

Lotsa Pasta has frozen pierogi in their big freezers in the back. I've tried them. Not as good as my mother-in-law's, but not too bad if you play around with them.

Is this the dish the two aliens (in Men in Black) asked for when they sat down to have lunch together?

Yes, when the Lurch-type character meets the old jeweler in the restaurant they're eating pierogi. Some people eat them with applesauce, some with sour cream, some with just butter.
I'm pretty sure you can get the Mrs. T's variety here. You just boil them until they float, add whatever topping you like and they're good to go. A minute or two in a well-oiled frying pan doesn't hurt either, sort of like the difference between steamed and fried Chinese dumplings,

I have somewhat of a reputation around pierogies in my family. As the story goes, I was just a small tyke when somebody found me climbing up on the stove to try to get to my dear, sainted Polish mother's pot of pierogies.

Alas, I was stopped before I reached the summit, and as a result of that traumatic childhood experience I have been on a lifelong quest to find those heavenly pillows of dough.

Obviously, the Chicago area still has enough of a Polish population that you can find them there, but that won't help you in Louisville. Since moving to the east coast, we found a brand called "Polish Priest" out of Connecticut that made them just like mom, and sold in our local groceries. Unfortunately, they appear to have gone out of business.

More recently I have found Kasia's Pierogis in our stores here. They're from Chicago, so you might be able to find them closer to Louisville. Alternately, it looks like they ship out of state.

Thanks for the tip. We haven't found anything in town that we've liked, we brought some pierogi back from Detroit (actually from Hamtramck) last month, but I'll try Star. Sounds good.

Thanks for the reminder on that place,Ive found some good things there in the past. Its been our "pierogative" to bring them back from Chicago frozen, but Id like to find a local source.

I'll second the Monkey Wrench. I loved the pierogies I had there. Granted, I'd never had them before, so I have nothing to base it on, but I LOVED them.
