Police Donuts

by Gayle DeM » Sat Mar 07, 2009 2:09 pm

Does anyone know anything about "Police Donuts" that is set to open on Monday morning in the strip mall across Shelbyville Rd. from the Eastgate shopping center? Looks like it may be a chain. (Shudder, shudder, :P )

Gayle,

I saw that shop the other day and thought to myself...WHAT a cool name for a donut shop. Should bring in the men in blue, ya think ?

BTW, there was a coffee shop in one of the MSP suburbs called "Joe Jitters"...always loved that name as well. Why can't I be that creative ?

If it is a chain it's a very small and obscure one. I did they Google search and it came up with nothing. My guess is it may be a local independent. Hopefully it'll be good, we need something on this side of town.

It is not a chain. The owner is a former police officer and thought it would be a cool concept.

I too googled before I posted and found the one in Phoenix. However, I made a big mistake. It is Police Doughnuts not Police Donuts. Their motto painted on van and store front is "To Protect and Serve Doughnuts." 8) I'm going to try to remember to stop by come Monday.

Go live in the South End for a while and see if you still make that statement. While the far flung east east end may not have more restaurants than you can shake a stick at, it has a much better selection than the long neglected South End.

We stopped by this place and got a dozen this AM. Not a huge selection - but what they have is fresh and tasty. The selection they had this morning focused on yeast style doughnuts - basic glazed or iced (chocolate/vanilla), cream filled long johns and crullers. One cake selection - blueberry. From conversations - I think the rotation changes. The yeast doughnuts remind me of the ones my grandmother made with bread starter - they have a distinct yeast flavor. That's not a bad thing - but somewhat unique with doughnuts I've tried in Louisville.

$0.94 per doughnut / $9.00 per dozen. Sign says open 7AM until they run out. It is owned by a retired KSP officer....not a chain.

Ooooh, those yeasty doughnuts sound like the ones my grandmother used to make. I' have to stop by and soon. It's just down the street from me.

Well if you have to have just one cake doughnut, blueberry is the one to have. My favorite doughnut ever!

My husband has been searching for chocolate coconut doughnuts forever. The Dunkin' Donuts people back East make them, but you cannot find them here in KY (we have tried, even in Lexington).

I hesitantly called him when I saw the sign for the Police Donuts. I was not encouraging him to eat donuts regularly, but thought he might find his elusive doughnut. He did stop by Police Doughnuts and asked for a chocolate coconut. They were very accomodating; they took a glazed doughnut, put chocolate on it and then some coconut. He said it was good. BUT...what he is craving is a chocolate CAKE doughnut that is then rolled in coconut.

He said the people are very nice, the donuts are good, the place is very simple....fun signage. "To serve and protect...donuts". They did put two donuts in one oversized box......cute sticker on the outside, but overkill for the packaging. They may want to try bags for smaller purchases.

I think they may want to advertise more, we only saw it by passing by and seeing the sign and the lights in the early morning.

Kiddingly (I Hope) he has said that when he retires he will somehow open a donut shop with Chocolate Coconut doughnuts being the featured item.

Forgive me for the interchanging of donut and doughnut. It is just how my fingers work (or don't) sometimes.

Is that the Middletown location? They opened a small store in LaGrange, but were closed in < 6 months -- it wasn't a prime spot for visibility.

Meanwhile, Lyndon's "Donut Kastle" keeps chugging along after 35+ years.

Sorry Annemarie, :( but the sign on the front lists hours M-S as 6:30 to 12:00 and Sunday 7:30 to 12:00.
