Caffe Classico

by Sallie P. » Tue Mar 03, 2009 3:12 pm

Went by today to have birthday lunch at one of my favorite places...Caffe Classico. They were closed. Are they on vacation? Closed on Tuesday? Or just an emergency that came up? Thanks.

Love that place! They're open for lunch only on Mondays and Tuesdays, lunch and afternoon Sundays, lunch and dinner the rest of the week. They nominally close at 3 p.m. Mon-Tue, but I expect Tommie would shut down early if there was nobody there to feed.

They've been doing a GREAT business lately and are really looking recession-proof (knock on wood), because they're really good and really affordable. I'm not worried about this one going dark on us.

I wasn't worried about about them being out of business....they are always very busy at lunchtime when I have been there. They were closed at 11:45....so it wasn't after lunch. That was why I thought it might have been an emergency that closed them.

Wait! Was there a sign on the door or window? I think I remember Tommie saying recently that they were closing for a couple of days to do some construction work - expand the kitchen? A distant bell is ringing here, but nobody is answering. ;)

I don't think it was more than a couple of days - maybe Monday and Tuesday. Give them a call tomorrow to double-check.

They were closed at 4:30 on Monday.

I'm a big Classico fan. On Sunday before last, I remember seeing a note that on a Monday and Tuesday, or was it Tue-Wed?, they'd be closed for cleaning, or reorg the kitchen or some such. Also an apology for any inconvenience. This probably was that week, so I think that's why they weren't open for the intended Tuesday birthday lunch.

Antonia on another thread alerted me to this place. I went with my daughter today for a late lunch--and what a treat!!

First, Caffe Classico is quite elegant and very clean. And then the service is attentive, helpful, welcoming, and genuinely friendly. And the food and drinks! Yum. We went in to try their soups, and we were extremely happy. I have another favorite soup place that's equal to the Uptown now. We sampled each of today's soup in the cup size. One of them was a savory black-eyed pea soup with greens and spicy Italian sausage. Wow. Rich, filling, perfectly flavored. The other was a gazpacho that was cool, refreshing, and yet quite savory at the same time. It was another winner.

My daughter ordered an Italian orange soda for her drink, which she liked a lot, but I wasn't sure what to order. Then I saw a large Euro coffee cup going by topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup going to another table. I pointed to it and said I'd like have one of those. Turns out it was a custom drink they make for one of their regulars, but they made one for me too. It was sinful but scrumptious. Fine european coffee with chocolate and the topping already described. Oh my. That was good. I guess the brand of coffee they use is Meinl, which I think is a fairly famous brand. For dessert we had some delicious gelato.

Anyway, the people who run Caffe Classico do a great job.

I must say I do not agree with where this place goes on the 100 point scale on this site. It got an 80 (????????). I would say Caffe Classico is more like a 90 (at least) based on the experience I just had. I think the number scale is way out of date for this place. The attention to detail, the delicious food, the ambiance, and graceful and charming service, etc.... Anyway, is there someone to contact to request that CC get re-rated for a more up-to-date number? I may have missed quite a bit of good eating here because of this--I feel--inaccurate rating.

Anyway, four thumbs up (my daughter's too) for Caffe Classico!

Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed Caffe Classico. What's great is that the next time you go back, they will different soups that you will love all over again. And you're right about the service - attentive but not too much. The place is a gem. Their saffron risotto cakes are usually irresistible to me... and the pomme frites with the three dipping sauces were an awesome addition to their menu sometime last year or so. Tommie has done amazing things with that place and has a lot to be proud of.

Actually, my most recent reviews of Caffe Classico have earned it an 88 rating. The 100 point index page is problematical since we moved HotBytes over to WordPress management software, because it doesn't update automatically. I need to get in there sometimes soon and give it a helluva shake.

In the meantime, rather than relying on that score page, I strongly recommend using the search feature to get my most recent reviews:

Oh, it can, it's just a painful manual, step-by-step job that needs to be done when I get time to update it. :P
