Great lunch at Captain's Quarters

by Deb Hall » Sun Mar 01, 2009 8:50 pm

I was downtown for meetings on Thursday and decided to travel the scenic route ( River Road) home and stop at CQ for a late lunch. My past dining experiences there have been almost exclusively on the deck- it's one of my very favorite outside dining spots in town. But having seen the beautiful dining room at Shrimp & Grits, I wanted to give it a try.

I was seated promptly at a great window booth- next best thing to sitting outside. It was a lovely sunny ( but cool) day, and when I commented in passing to the host how much I enjoy their deck, I was surprised and impressed that he immediately offered to set-up a table on the deck for me ( I know a single customer outside is a pain for the server). The service overall was extremely attentive. My grilled chicken wrap ( $6.95) was outstanding -obviously freshly grilled chicken, still warm from the grill- with an excellent chipotle mayo with just the right amount of spice. It was very large and could have been two meals, but it was so good I ended up eating the whole thing. It came with a side of excellent tri-color housemade tortilla chips. When I asked for a side of salsa ( expecting jarred commercial salsa) , my waitress returned with a side of fresh pico de gallo- at no extra cost. Overall it was a great experience- we'll definitely be back soon.

I agree, Deb. While we prefer the deck also, eating at one of the window tales on a bright clear day, looking at the river, relaxing, is so nice that we rarely even think about the food (which is uniformly much better than one would expect).

When the weather is right, CQ remains among the better dining experiences in Louisville....

Thank you Deb for the visit and kind words, we are watching the weather patiently and look forward to a possibly early spring :D . In the meantime sitting in the lodge you cannot beat the atmosphere that the river brings in any kind of weather.

Andrew,

That was my past experience too, but this visit altered my mind set. That sandwich was one of the best wraps I've ever had. We may have visited in the past largely for the view, but now I'm going back for the food!
