Good one, Annemarie! I assume you're including the period when it was known as Bill Boland's. This definitely pushes us back past the middle '70s, when the Louisville restaurant explosion really got started.

How about The Old House in Simpsonville? Is it currently open? I guess changing hands and decor periodically makes it kind of an asterisk situation, too, but in some form it's been around since at least our parents' time. I wonder if Science Hill in Shelbyville doesn't go back quite a way, too.

John E's was Bill Bolands until the mid 50's. Before that Bill Boland's was in the space at Bowman Field from shortly after WW11. Boland retired and sold the place to John Shanchuk in the early 80's.

The Old Stone Inn in Simpsonville is still opene. The building is owned by the Purnell family (it's goooooooood). Don't know who operates it now. Paul Crump GM of Porcini did for awhile. Last fall it was advertising music by Harold Thom of the Cumberlands on the outside patio. Originally opened by two or three sisters 1930 +/- only during the racing season, Louisville and maybe Lexington. They lived upstairs. Has changed hands a number of times since and was vacant for awhile.

I went to Science Hill a few times in my 20's so that makes it at least 40 years old.

That is super sad news! I go there at least 2-3 times a month with my Mom and daughter! LOADS of memories in the building plus knew the original owners... :(

This hits home , I am related to the original owners and have spent so much time there, a true loss for the Highlands as well

Steinert's burned to the ground about a year ago and has not reopened. If they do, I believe it would merit one of Robin's *, as there is nothing left of the old building.

I do think one way to help the economy is to try and not react with fear. We have been trying to go out almost every night to support the local restaurants. In times of recession, money needs to be spent to keep alive what provides some essence and meaning to what could be the every day mundane. Many restaurants have tried to meet the needs of this economic crisis by altering their menus to provide a lower cost, but excellent dining experience. Donna and I plan to support them in every way. "Keep it on." We will get through this madness..............................

Right now it is just a muddy crater where they bulldozed the remains of the building down. I have not heard any plans of theirs to rebuild and reopen, but they could just be letting these tough times get by.

My store is getting up there in age.... we were founded in 1970 and my parents bought it from the original owner in 1976.

Does anyone know for sure why Kaelin's is closing? Everyone is assuming it's the general economy but it could be a thousand other things.

The word on the streets is that they are turning it into an Italian restaurant

I recall opening a pan of green chili wontons , setting up a station, and seeing a roach playing in such. Of course, threw the food out. Has this ever happened to you ? Is there a capable pest control service out there?
