I've been to Palermo Viejo for my last 2 birthdays so I may be biased but I would suggest there. Great steaks, fries and if you're eccentric like me, sweetbreads. Not too expensive either. They also have some very good wines.

Both restaurants you mention our wonderful and since you haven't been to Equus would probably go there for something different. Of course there also lots of other excellent local restaurants that would be nice for your birthday such as Corbett's, Z's, Jack Fry's, Avalon and many many others. You can read about many of them here but you certainly can't go wrong with either of the ones you mentioned.

Hope you have a great birthday dinner no matter where you end up!

I would look for something special.....something like Napa River Grill, Hiko-A-Mon, Equus, Vincenzo's (a very special birthday place, IMO), Z's Fuzion or Oyster Bar & Steakhouse, Asiatique, or Basa.....

Treat yourself to Corbett's....you won't regret it! We had dinner there last week and it was so good I think we'll go back next week. The atmosphere just makes you feel good even before you begin to eat the food. I had a wonderful short-rib....falling off the bone.

Agreed on all counts. The only piece of cautionary advice I would give is that the main floor and the lower floor are very different in feel, and some people may prefer one or the other. If you have the possibility of checking before you choose, it wouldn't be a bad idea. (Personally, I love the main floor, but the downstairs not so much. But I've talked to plenty of other folks who love the downstairs, so it really is an individual thing.)

I'm in total agreement...eat in the upstairs. The cellar has a low ceiling and is not sound-proofed from above.

While you can't really go wrong on any of these, I'd hit Lilly's! Like Equus, it was revamped and now has a much more affordable menu, but is still a truly class experience.
