Road trip to Jimmy

by Catherine Davidson » Thu Feb 26, 2009 9:56 am

Have friends leaving Friday, 2/27 for Plains, GA to visit with Jimmy Carter. Trip is relatively low budget. First overnight is Nashville. Second is Birmingham. Anyone have any suggestions for food along the way? Travelers really enjoy local food! Many thanks, CD

Last time I was in Plains was late 1989, so this may be outdated info, but there was a great Mennonite restaurant somewhere near Americus or Andersonville.

Just googled it and it looks like it is still around Yoder’s Deitsch Haus - Montezuma, GA

I was recently blown away at a dinner in Nashville at Sunset Grill. Very very good, and inexpensive for what it is. The quality of food vs. price reminds me of Varonese. See the below thread for my writeup and link to the restaurant.

I was talking to a gal who went to hear Jimmy preach and she said to eat the fried chicken at Mom's Cafe in Plains. She said it was the best she's ever had!

If they are looking for fine dining- Highlands Bar & Grill is the place to go in Birmingham. It was rated by Gourmet magazine as the #5 restaurant in the United States. Chef Frank Stitt has been repeatedly mentioned in numerous travel and food magazines and is widely recognized in the industry as one of the best chefs in the country. http://www.highlandsbarandgrill.com

Bottega is Stitt's Italian restaurant in Birmingham, a bit easier to get in than Highlands Bar & Grill.

All sound great so far. What about pie? Any places particularly known for their pies? CD

This list of "100 Best Southern Foods" may be handy for places along the way- I know they had pie places listed in the original article.

After seeing the Loveless website, I'm thinking of a day trip myself.

Thanks to everyone word is road trip was delicious! Especially one meal in particular. "We had lunch at Mom’s kitchen: the best fried chicken I’ve eaten, dressing, turnip greens, fried cornbread, rutabagas, sweet tea and sweet potato pie. Yep." That sounds like a meal to me! CD
