sick with a cold and want sala thai hot soup

by Sarita C » Tue Feb 24, 2009 11:39 pm

I used to go there for nothing else. So sad they have closed.

Does anyone know anywhere in Louisville that makes something like it?
Was spicy hot and had lemongrass, a nice chicken base and noodles.

I'm willing to make it if anyone has a recipe but I would rather pick up a gallon of it somewhere.

Just about any Thai restaurant should have a variety of soups, Sarita. Ask for Tom Yum, which sounds pretty close to what you're describing here. :)

Here's a recipe for a shrimp version on a Thai cooking Website:

And this Wikipedia entry pretty much tells enough to let you come up with a variation at home, plus loads of recipe links:

The V4 at Annie Cafe is close to what you're describing. IMHO it is the best soup in Louisville and it is the perfect soup for a cold. You adjust the spiciness with Sriracha sauce and/or the hot chili sauce at the table. The soup comes with crispy tofu and noodle. On the side is a plate of fresh chili peppers, peppermint leaves, limes and some kind of sprout-like vegetable to add in proportions to your liking..

Hasn't the style and menu changed significantly though, Mike? Or not?

A few things have changed but most of the saem dishes are there. It's 90% of the same staff I imagine if they have stuff on hand for something unlisted they will make it.

Thanks a bunch ya'll. I'm in for a few at work to do some things and then I'm heading out to pick up sick supplies. (dayquil, nyquil, vernors, ice, soup.)
My husband is down with it as well although I don't think I have it as bad as he does.

Stay healthy!

I remember the first time I had Tom Yum. One of my employees was Thai and his mother had brought back some bullion cubes from the motherland. The first sip actually took my breath away it was so spicy hot. From then on, it was the go to "sick" soup. Wish I could find those cubes stateside....

Ebay appears to have them. They're not stateside, but the price with shipping for 4 boxes is under $10.

I tried Sala Thai downtown but there was no parking so I called Annie's and talked to I'm assuming Annie. I told her I was looking for a chicken based chicken noodle soup that was spicy and had a lemongrass flavor. She made a E.1 Pho. Ran after that to get my other sick supplies and finally am sitting down to enjoy....am in heaven. Almost makes having a cold tolerable.

Thanks guys!

Sarita

BTW...I think I've been to Annie's before but it's been years. I'll surly go back when I'm well to try the other dishes.

Totally different soup, but as the chef, I've gotta mention our Hearty Vegetable Soup. The soup is on my mind for some reason, and we've been getting great compliments on it from foodies. It definitely is the time of the year for soup, especially with everyone getting sick.

Ingredients vary slightly, but usually include green beans, corn, cauliflower, potatoes(did I spell it right Mr. Quayle?), onion, garlic, Cannelli beans (or great northern), tomato paste, Seitan (our meat substitute), plenty of Italian seasoning, and probably a couple other things I'm forgetting. We saute some of the ingredients in olive oil prior to adding veggie broth and the rest.

Cheers,

Simply Thai has a good tom yum. Thai Siam used to have a great one but not sure now. That soup is the first thing I reached for whenever I felt a funk coming on. Good luck let us know...
