Germantown/Schnitzelburg Folks: Old Hickory Caught on Fire

by Joel H » Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:11 pm

I'll post more in a bit, I have to run to the store, but the Old Hickory caught on fire this afternoon. That's the bar catty-corner from Flabby's. Thankfully nobody was hurt (according to WHAS 11, the owners still haven't even shown up to the scene), and no other buildings were damaged. Pictures in a bit when I get back.

According to the C-J (on-line), the owner of the "Old Hickory Inn" claims that he currently has no insurance on the business, but apparently others own the property which housed the tavern.

I am puzzled how anyone could run a business like this without insurance. What's up with that? Isn't this regulated in some way?

I expect liability insurance is required. I doubt that property insurance is, although as this shows, it's very foolish to take the risk of going without.

Yes, it's sad to see a local landmark go up in smoke, but even sadder to realize it likely won't return.

I actually go through that intersection frequently as part of my shortcut from home/work to the Poplar Level Rd area. I went by there after lunch with a friend today and it certainly is a total loss from what it looks like. The outside of the building is intact but they had been pulling debris that was blackened and unrecognizable out to the sidewalk, and the areas around the doors were charred. I didn't get a good look at the roof though since there were quite a few people walking around and it can be close quarters on that streeet as it is. It's amazing the familiar landmarks you take for granted when it's routine to pass by them nearly every day for years, and seeing that made me pretty sad. I will more than likely go by there in the morning again so I may snap a pic or two.

Having had a few small businesses, I know that neither property insurance nor liability insurance is required. You are just taking a gamble if you don't have it. Of course you are taking a gamble if you do have it. Sometimes you are the bug. Sometimes you are the windshield.

Somewhat off the subject, what really gripes me is the recent storms and insurance. I have a couple of trees down and fence damage and a hot tub repair because of lack of power. My insurance will cover this, minus deductible. Looks like the government may cover damage for people without insurance. So I pay twice, increase on my insurance and taxpayer money for fixing deadbeats.
