Shrove Tuesday: Get your Gumbo on

by Ed Vermillion » Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:20 am

Mardi Gras snuck up on me this year. The secret weapon in Gumbo this year is.......David Clancy. While he is working at Butcher's Best in Prospect with Jimmy & Amy he is also cooking some incredible chow for carry out. My beautiful bride picked up some Gumbo on Saturday and I went back Sunday for a larger container. Dave's Gumbo is out of the ballpark lip smacking good. He's always got something good on. Give 'em a shout at (502)365-4650 and see if they have any Gumbo left (he'll make more!).

Ed,
I called as soon as I saw your post but, unfortunately, he doesn't have much left this morning. The good news is, he is making more today!!! Talked to Dave and told him about your post. He said "hi" and "thanks". We are very lucky to have such a great place so close to us.

I know both Cafe Lou Lou's have specials through Tuesday--gumbo, red beans & rice, etc. Also, Marsha's adorable King Cake cupcakes!

David,
My husband LOVES hot boudin. If I come by, will you have some on hand? The hotter the better.

I put gummy bears in the lucky ones. Plastic babies sound good until somebody loses a filling. I understand that everybody in NOLA knows to watch out for foreign objects in any pastry decorated with purple, green and gold, but brother - this ain't NOLA.

Ed,

Is David's a Seafood Gumbo or a Chicken and Andouille Gumbo?

Thanks,
Perry

I think he called and while pretty hot and flavorfull, I am nervous now that they are not hot enough?? Hope he digs em and if they are too mild, I'll give him a full refund and make him a wicked-hot batch when he has a Boudin craving.-Dave

David,

I love a good Gumbo.

When Beau Weevil Restaurant was open(closed in 2001 I think), a couple of co-workers and myself ate there all the time. Pete Mak, the Chef/Owner, made some killer Gumbo. I have been searching years for a good replacement. Before he left town he gave me his recipe, but it doesn't taste the same.
Here is the link to Robin's review. http://www.iglou.com/restaurants/weevil.shtml

I will definitely have to try yours.

Thanks,
Perry

Thanks for posting this, Ed! I ordered 2 quarts for take out for tomorrow, along with some red beans and rice. We're really looking forward to it. I'm taking a quart home to my mom in WV this weekend. I don't think she's ever had gumbo, so this should be an adventure for her! I've been meaning to head out to Butcher's Best for some time, and imagine I will end up with some other wonderful treats!

Hi Marsha!

My mom lives in the Parkesburg area. I was born and raised there, and still have strong roots. Where does your dad live? Are you from there? Always love to hear from fellow Mountaineers!
