Fresh Market

by Phil Gissen » Sun Feb 22, 2009 7:30 pm

Donna and I just explored the "Fresh Market" on Shelbyville Road and were quite impressed. We bought up just about everything in their deli department and are about to stuff our faces. Hey, Louisville, with Lotsa Patsa, Bergers, Whole Foods, Paul's Fruits, Creation Garden, and Fresh Market, you guys are certainly holding your own in the grocery game. Now, where's a good place to buy fresh seafood? Phil

My faves are Whole Foods and Seafood Connection - both in St. Matthews.

Next time you go to the Fresh Market, ask in Produce for Richard. He is very proud of the store as a whole and produce in particular. he will let you taste about anything in his department, especially if you are not familiar with the fruit or veggie. He is my hubby by the way.... :D

I like the Viet Hoa supermarket at 7100 Preston (used to be Da Hua). Pretty good-sized heads-on fresh shrimp for $5.99 a pound when I was in there last Saturday.

Definitely have to go with Highland seafood in Middletown for most seafood choices. Fresh Market however does run some specials on some very nice shrimp from time to time that is reasonably priced and excellent.

Love all these places but you have to be semi-rich to shop there.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

I shop at Fresh Market occasionally and don't find their prices to be particularly exhorbitant (and no one will mistake me for being "semi-rich")....they might be higher than some of the mainstream grocers, but they also have many hard-to-find items which others simply don't (and won't) carry....

I think Whole Foods has the best looking seafood and largest selection, hands down.

On the other hand, Highland Fish Market and Seafood Connection are locally owned and operated. To many of us, that makes a difference.

I do shop at Whole Foods, but I try to limit my buying there to items I can't find at local shops like the fish markets, Lotsa Pasta, Rainbow Blossom, Doll's, Burger's, Preferred Meats, etc.

I try to support the local markets, Robin. However, everytime I have gone to the local fish markets, they have very limited product and the fish doesn't look good. Sorry, but just my take on the subject.

Sue, you are 100 percent entitled to your preference - no criticism intended or implied. That said, it has been my experience that Highland (in Middletown) and Seafood Connection (in St. Matthews) are both quite careful about sourcing and caring for their fish. They may not have the same quantity or selection on any given day, but I've found plenty to choose from.

I find that Highland Fish Market in Middletown has the best seafood around. If only it weren't all the way in Middletown...... With that said Seafood Connection is just as good as Whole Foods but Seafood Connection has a Lobster Roll there that is delish!

I usually try to get into Seafood Connections first, but they close at 6:00 pm. So if I'm delayed and coming home later the the nod is to Whole Foods. I'd love to go to Middletown but it's just not practical. I'll buy salmon and trout from Doll's I might add.

This is probably unfair, but when I look at the fish at Doll's and the fish at Seafood Connection, I generally just go on over to Seafood Connection. In general I admire Doll's and really love the way they've come upscale to address a different market niche than Kroger, but, I dunno, the fish in there just doesn't always look to me like it just got here.
