Take Out in Old Louisville

by Matthew D » Sat Feb 21, 2009 10:40 am

After having to eat at a chain restaurant last night, I'm going to try to recover my pallet tonight with some good, local take out.

I have a friend coming into town who just finished the last(?) of her medical STEP tests. So she's completely brain fried and doesn't want to deal with the over-stimulation that comes with a restaurant (lights, crowds, noise, etc.). On the other hand, she's threatened to kick my ass if I spend time in the kitchen fixing something for us. So, I'd hate to be in that predicament. We've made peace and decided that take-out is the way to go. Someone else fixes the food, we enjoy it at my place over some good conversation.

Unfortunately, I do take-out like once in a blue moon. So, I'm not sure what the offerings are in the Old Louisville area. I've got Carly Rae's on the list, and then, that's about it. Does the Lou Lou in the Highlands do take out? That might be a little far, but I'd consider it...and then pizza options....and...

So, I'm at first and Oak and am looking for good takeout. Can be ethnic, American, or whatever. We're both adventurous eaters. But it has to be good, and it has to be local, as my taste buds need some help recovering from last night...
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

OK, neighbor (Preston and Oak)….

CarlyRaes is good, also near by is 3rd Avenue Café (some vegetarian items so good that my carnivore hubby likes it!) and Ermins (open early in the day, but great food).

For “greasy spoon”, there is Dizzy Whiz - love that Whizz Burger.

Chinese at 4th and Oak, can’t remember the name.

Amici for Italian over on 6th.

Granville Inn for pub food - great hamburgers

Venture to Germantown to Flabby’s for fried chicken and rolled oysters or try Checks’ or Zeppelin Café.

Hope that helps!! :D

That is a great list, though I would add one to it... (I'm at Brook & Burnett :) ) Smoketown USA is at Logan and E St. Catherine, it has become one of my favs for take out. I'm addicted to both their Smoked Chicken Salad sandwiches and the greens. Here is their website: http://www.smoketownusa.com

Edited a couple of times because the URL wasn't coming up properly for some reason....

Hi Neighbor. I'm on 1st between St. Catherine and Oak! Here are my suggestions (other than the ones already made) nothing fancy, but at least it gives you options:

-The corner store (Jimmy's) at 1st. and St. Catherine does pretty good fried chicken and wedges.

-Hill St. Fish Fry

-Juanita's Burger Boy (supposedly they're a lot better now that they're under new mgmt.)

-Annie's pizza in portland is to die for...but you gotta pick it up!

-You could always pick up Bristol downtown

-WingZone on Preston (not in Old Louisville) supposedly delivers

That's all I can think of right now!

You can carry out from Lou Lou in the Highlands. Yes, it's a little far, but - dude, it's Mardi Gras this weekend! That means gumbo, red beans and rice, jambalaya, crawfish and corn chowder, etouffe and king cupcakes are our specials! You wouldn't want to miss that, and your friend would love it, too.

We actually deliver from our Highlands store, but the delivery area is limited to a 3 mile radius, and I think you might be just outside that a little bit. Here is the phone number so you can call ahead: 459-9566

Sorry for the slight thread hijack, but Marsha, are you all doing the Mardi Gras specials through Tues?

Shah's Mongolian Grill near 65 and Warnock is fantastic. About 5 dollars for a good selection of vegetables and tofu (if you like it) and 1 meat. Extra meats cost 1 dollar more. Then they customize the sauce for you and fry it up on a hibachi grill. The food is inexpensive, fast, and delicious. Whenever I take food to my girlfriend (she lives near campus), I almost always go to Shah's.

Check out Safier on 4th St. Really great food and budget friendly. Not exactly Old Louisville, but not too far away.

Hey Marsha you got a menu? Sometimes after a long day of cooking I really don't want to cook when I get home and sometimes to tired to go out. That would be a wonderful option. Hoping I am in that 3 mi radius.

Tons of great options, but theres many more of course. You could order high end stuff from Bucks :) In reality though, I would go with Safier, but he closes around 8. Thats ok, because across the street you have BBC and also a small place called Yaffa Cafe which has great gyros, smoothies, and hookah for cheap and its open til at least 9 (sometimes 11, its the old Theatre Square Deli).
