Avalon

Donna and I had our second excellent meal at the bar in Avalon, a restaurant a few blocks from our apartment. Christian and Alicia were wonderfully warm and efficient bartenders and the appetizers were unique and tasty. Donna chose a tangy beef rib dish and I devoured a huge rib from from some Uncle's farm that the restaurant purchased at an auction. I felt like Fred Flintstone - the rib was ridiculously gigantic! Donna's second entree was chicken wings and a waffle. While this sounds strange to us Northerners, it was tasty, unique, and fun. I was told that Avalon's patio and outside bar are fabulous in the warm weather, and I am sure I will be a regular. The restaurant has a "ladies night out" special and both times we visited, the place was filled with women of all ages. It certainly would be a single's man dream. I think Avalon is under rated by Louisville's restaurant mavens.

My wife and I went to Avalon for Valentine's day. Sort of a let down. The food was pretty good (we weren't blown away) but the service was disorganized at best. They had a limited menu, set number of reservations and we still had to skip dessert because we had been there for two hours and had to be somewhere else. We got food that was supposed to go to another table twice. We saw food runners walking from table to table asking if they'd ordered this dish. It was not a terrible experience but not a great one either.

Mike,
Perhaps we received better service at the bar and I do believe the "small plates" menu or the appetizers are better then the entrees. Also, it may be that every restaurant is over-whelmed on Valentine's Day. When I owned a couple of places in Milwaukee, Valentine's Day was a veritable nightmare. The servers were on dramatic melt down. Take care.

Mike, with all respect, Valentine's Day (and Mother's Day) are the two worst days of the year to dine out. Everybody's slammed, and no matter how hard they try, it's a rare thing to find either a kitchen or service at its best.

Same's true of Derby and Oaks days here too, really, but on those days everyone is having way too much fun to care. :D

I love my wife so much I dont take her out on Valentine's Day or Mother's Day. :D We always laugh about going out on her birthday, Bastlle Day, wondering why it isn't packed for le' celebration.

I can't wait to get in there and try their grass-fed burger for 10 bucks!

We made our meal of salads and six of the little plates and it was fun and delicious. Then we had room saved for dessert. Vday is always a discombobulated day in a restaurant.

Hehe. It can be likened to being racked (the mideval torture technique, not the doritos commercial.) You get pulled in every direction and try your very best just not to make any mistake. Cause that would mean you have to spend time fixing the problem, putting you further behind. Which makes you make another mistake. etc. etc. oy vey!
