Frank's Steak House

by Rick G » Mon Apr 30, 2007 9:36 pm

Went to Frank's tonight even though they don't officially open till tomorrow. The place was very busy and I didn't get there till after 8 and they were only serving food till 9, so unfortunately I didn't get to try the food. It looks like they didn't change the interior. Maybe just a little face lift. Heard some mixed comments about the food. But I will wait to try it
myself before I'll comment.

Ah, a classic Louisville description, taking us all the way back to the '70s! Good work! :)

It should also be mentioned that Frank's is the first Louisville shop of an old Jeffersonville, Ind., steakhouse that some compare, more or less, to Pat's.

I went to Frank's about ten years ago; I have never been to Pat's, but Frank's seemed decidedly low-rent at the time. I remember that the bread served with the meal was a buttered half of a hamburger bun, and that the baked potato was orange with Lawry's Seasoned Salt. Which is why I keep a shaker of Lawry's in the cupboard to this day. Maybe Frank's has taken a turn for the better if they are opening a second location.

Frank's

Yes, Frank's has been a Southern Indiana tradition for well over twenty years. It has had it's ups and downs(mostly service related)but for the most part it's a pretty decent place for a steak. It's nothing special by any means as compared to other low end steak-houses,(places that serve USDA Choice and Select graded meat) but the recent change in ownership has brought on some changes for the better. They have finally re-modeled the place and have new service(Plates, Glasses,etc.). They have also tweeked the menu a little. I've eaten many meals there(it's close to the house) and feel that it's better than it has ever been. I also get a lot of baked potatoes "to-go" from Frank's to accompany steaks that I grill at home. My wife loves the "Loaded Sweet Potato" with marshmellows and brown sugar. If the new place is anything like the original location, it will probably be OK. Nothing to write home about, but fans of Texas Roadhouse and Logan's will probably like it.

Dan, I worked at Frank's Steak House in 1971/1972, so they've been in business at least 36 years. OMG, that can't be right. I'm surely not that old!!!

I used to wait tables there "on my way home" from business school in downtown Louisville. It was an institution then.

Frank's is where I too learned how wonderful Lawry's Seasoned Salt is on baked potatoes. It's a fixture in my kitchen for that reason. I can't remember the last time I used it on anything other than a baked potato.

It's also where I learned how to eat a steak that was not well done. My momma always cooked meat (and vegetables too) until she was sure they were dead!

The Manager at Frank's caught me ordering a steak well done and threw a fit. He forced me to try a steak medium rare instead. It was the first time I'd ever actually tasted a steak that wasn't overcooked shoe leather. I never looked back!!

I had my first 'medium' steak there about 20 years ago, as my mom had always made sure that 45-60 minutes had elapsed on the grill! No more shingle steak for me after that... 'Medium' at most places now, M/R if I trust the kitchen to hit it accurately (Del Friscoes comes to mind).

Frank's is what it is, and is similiar to TX Roadhouse for their menu selection. Back to the steak 'doneness', my dad used to tell me about a place in Bowling Green that played the 'funeral march' dirge on their PA system when a well-done steak was sent out of the kitchen :D .

Regards,
Brian

Going to try it tonight

by Bill Veneman » Mon May 07, 2007 3:22 pm

Just was informed that my every other Monday dinner bunch is going to go and try Frank's this evening.......will let you know what I find out.

I'm Impressed!!!!!!

For the old fans of Garretts, you can go home again.....LOTS of the old menu items are there.....and the steak I had this evening was very nicely prepared, the choice of sides is pletiful, and the prices are reasonable. It's not going to appeal to the Morton's or Jeff Ruby crowds, however, if you're wanting a good steak (or other dish), good service (our server tonight was incredable, and got a very nice tip from our table), in a warm and friendly atmosphere, then it's well worth the money.

Very nice evening, indeed!
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!
