J Train Pizza

by DeeDee D » Mon Feb 16, 2009 5:30 pm

We checked out J Train in Jeffersonville on Spring St Saturday for lunch. It was me, DH and the 2 kids (5&4). We ordered the garlic knots, which were a specialty according to the menu. They came out in what reminded me of a pasta bowl. There were 10-12 little knots of dough swimming (literally swimming) in garlic butter! They were hot and delicious. Next came the pizza. 14inch sausage pepperoni. The crust was NY style and a bit soggy. Nothing horrible, but noticeable. The sauce was thick and sweet, which I really enjoyed. They fold over the edges of the crust to form a thicker edge, it was really nice. Everything was really good, except when the check came.....8.00 for 4 cokes!!!!! 2.00 each, even the kids! I thought that was a bit much for drinks, when two of them were for kids. But, aside from the drinks, we were pleased and would go back.

There are lots of photos of the Real J Train on the walls! Love the atmosphere, but the times I've tried it, the pizza has not been New York style, and I don't care for the funny way they fold over the crust at the outside at all.

(We always took the N train to our place in Queens, by the way, or rarely the R and walked an extra eight blocks from Steinway if the N just wouldn't come. :) (I think they traded the names of the N and the W since we came back home.)

I lived in Woodhaven, so I would get the J train "on the ave", and take it over the Williamsburg bridge, and get off and transfer for the six
Sometimes I would take the 6 to the N and then take the Q11 bus down to Jamaica Ave. from Queens blvd.

The pizza at this place is alright definitely better than the chains but doesnt beat Rich-O's or CPC or Adrienne's which are all nearby. Both times I've been the service has been painfully slow. I recommend if you're going to try it, get it to go.

I've been to J-Train a few times, and I really like their food. I do agree about the service being somewhat slow at times, though.

I really like the rolled over crust that they have. They do the toppings all the way to the edge of the pizza and then roll it over, which traps the sauce, cheese, and toppings in the crust. It gives it great flavor all the way through the crust.

While not my favorite pizza in town, it is really good stuff, and worth a try.

I don't hate it, Todd. ;) But to me it's so idiosyncratic that it really blows the notion that it's NYC-style pizza.

Is that kinda like the "best fish in town" or the "coldest beer in town" or the "world famous chicken wings"?? I'm just asking.......

Can these things be proven :? :?

In this case, yeah, I'd say so. I've lived in NYC off and on, and eaten a lot of pizza there. I think I can recognize the genre when I see it. J Train's isn't it (even though the subway photos on the walls are), and that folded edge is definitely not NYC. It might be good, but yeah, you can prove it. :)

I agree, not NY style.... the crust isn't flexible enough, the top is not greasy enough to be NY style, and the rolled crust definitely makes it non-New York. The only thing New York is the pictures on the wall, and I think the owner is from there. It is darn good pizza though.....

Side not as to the "best" tagline, they were voted best pizza in Clark County :). Not sure who voted, or where, but they have a huge banner outside the door stating that. In Clark County, I'll take Charlestown Pizza Company over them.

I've seen a couple of businesses proclaiming themselves the "best ________ in clark county". I would love to know when this balloting occurred as I didnt get to vote.

Todd, that may be but I'm not sure if you have noticed the "Thanks for voting us best seafood in Clark County" sign in front of Moby Dick. In my opinion that alone should take the legs out of any such claim in Clark County. ...that is unless The Keg won for Best liquor store in Clark County.

We have eaten at J Train a couple of times and I am thrilled to have them in Southern Indiana. I will gladly patronize them over the typical pizza places in Jeff. I like their pies but I am dying to try their Guinness Beer Cheese & pretzel. Has anyone given this a try?

Hey, don't go hatin' on Moby Dick! It may be a chain, but it's locally owned and operated with properties only in and around Louisville, and their fish-sandwich quality, in my opinion, is competitive with the other fried-fish places around town.
