LEO/LHB: A magic carpet ride to Caspian Grill

by Robin Garr » Thu Feb 12, 2009 6:21 pm

LEO's Eats with Louisville HotBytes.com

We've talked before about how Louisville's Iranian-American community started in the 1970s with a crowd of students at the University of Louisville who decided to stay around when the Ayatollah Khomeini led the Iranian revolution and things went sour back home.

Iran's loss has been Louisville's gain, as a surprising number of these folks went into the restaurant business. Initially many of Louisville's Iranians worked at the late, storied Casa Grisanti. They eventually ventured out to start restaurants of their own, and in more recent years have begun introducing us to their native cuisine. (The respected restaurateur Majid Ghavami, for instance, bridges this gap, now serving as both owner of Saffron's, the city's first Iranian restaurant, and general manager of Volare, one of our most popular Italian eateries.)

Now comes another Italian-to-Iranian translation, as the owners of Café Glace on Frankfort Avenue, a gelato shop, have opened Caspian Grill, an excellent Persian restaurant on Bardstown Road, in the quarters formerly occupied by Sweet Surrender.

(With post-Ayatollah Iran often at odds with U.S. policy, many of the Iranian restaurants describe themselves as "Persian," an equally valid term going back to the region's ancient empire.)

Thanks for that article Robin. I've been meaning to try Caspian Grill since it opened, but I keep getting sidetracked. You've officially spurred me to action!

Thanks for the heads up on the new Persian restaurant. I can't wait to give it a try being such a huge fan of Persian cuisine.
I would like to comment that although Saffron's was officially the first Persian restaurant in town, Pesto's Italian Restaurant on 5th and Chestnut has been serving Persian food long before Saffron's came about. Owner, Esse Chitsaz was one of the Persians that started out in the Italian Restaurant scene; while he continues to carry on his Italian beginnings, he still offers up the Persian menu for dinner on Fridays and for lunch and dinner on Saturdays. My wife first tried Persian food at Pesto's when she was in the 8th grade which was back in 1992. As a matter of fact she recalls that Majid Ghavami (Saffron's owner) used to work at Pesto's back in the day. After trying out all the newest Persian eateries in town over the years, we still can't resist the Friday and Saturday Persian menu at Pesto's, not to mention Esse's down to earth personality and charm. It's our favorite Persian food and Esse has become a dear friend to us!
In our opinion they have the best Koobideh Kabob in town, not to mention the heaping plate of moist basmati rice with saffron that comes along with it. Not one Persian restaurant in town can beat his portion sizes for the price! Who can resist the leftovers! We also always get the Kashk O'bademjan (Eggplant appetizer), Must O'kheyar (Cucumber Dip) and Shirazi salad and by the way, their Sabzi plate is complimentary. Here is the link to their website so you can check it out yourselves:

Although Pesto's serves their Persian menu on a limited number of days during the week, I feel the Persian food should not be overlooked and believe me, it's worth the wait! I have always felt that Pesto's has never gotten the credit they deserve for their Persian offerings so I just wanted to make sure to give my props to Pesto's.

Ronnie, thanks for the tip! I'm afraid Pesto's gets overlooked a lot, and that's hardly fair. I hear good things about Esse. I need to get back in there and check it out, and I appreciate the nudge.
