La Relais

by Lisa W » Thu Feb 12, 2009 4:55 pm

I was thinking of some wonderful French fare for Valentines Day dinner and La Relais came to mind but then I remembered someone saying that a customer was bitten by a rat there! Does anyone know if that is true?

Yes, that was true. A friend of mine was bitten by a rat while dining on the patio. But since you won't be dining on the patio, I think you will be safe!

I don't think that I can bring myself to eat there knowing that. I would be looking for the big attack on my ankle!!!!!!

There is always plausible deniability. It is one of the top tables in town. Just act like it never happened and go enjoy yourself. :)

Lisa,

Freak occurences happen everywhere. I would not give that a second thought: Le Relais has been one of our top tables ( top 5 in many people's books) for many years- with fantastic food & service, stellar execution and romantic atmosphere. It would be the perfect place to go for a wonderful Valentine's Day.

IT WAS OUT- F*@%ING- SIDE. I hate to break it to you...but (OMFG!?) ANIMALS LIVE OUTSIDE. If you choose to eat things that wild animals might want to eat outside, then you should consider the fact that said animals would be drawn to you...espesially if said foodstuffs should touch the ground. It'd be pretty freaking ridiculous to blame Le Relais for a critter outside. I can't think of a restaurant in Louisville with a patio that hasn't had animal issues.

Personally, when I dine al fresco, I kind of expect to see some animals. I can then share my victuals with them. I especially like doing this in Jamaica.

I understand the sentiment and your point Jeremy, but don't you think that's a little harsh ?- particularly for a relatively infrequent poster, who may not be used to us regulars. Some folks are a bit phobic about rodents, so I could understand Lisa's question. But you are absolutely right- it's a non-issue as they wouldn't be eating outside.

It was a little harsh...but I held my tongue completely when this incident came up previously, and I think that a lot of the reactions then were absurdly unfair to Le Relais, and a lot less people came to their defense then should have. I mean, food outside...what the hell can you really do? My aim was to make extremely clear how ridiculous it is to blame something like that on the restaurant and to prevent it from going so far this time.

Jeremy, I think your response was spot on! It was outside. How can you judge any place for any natural happenings outside of their building? A few years ago when Bistro New Albany was open, we were having dinner outside and my husbands tower was buzzed by a bird! No one exited the place in horror!!! We were outside, it was bound to happen! Plus can you blame the critters for wanting some crumbs from either place???

Just for the sake of Googling and spelling bees and whatever (OH GOD NO, NOT BEES!) I'm pretty sure it's "Le Relais" rather than "La Relais" - no reflection on the OP. Easy mistake.

Considering it was a "French" restaurant I'm surprised no one thought to cook the rat (apologies to one of the "5 top tables" in town). On a personal note we've got a rabbit living under our deck. I'm thinking sometime around Easter I might....ahhhhhhhh never mind.

Sorry about that Dee Dee. I considered putting fresh Squab on the menu as we had a bunch that lived at the Inn and straffed the guests on the patio.....should have handed out pellet guns for patio dining.
