Cask-conditioned, hand-pulled HopSlam at NABC, Thursday.

by Roger A. Baylor » Wed Feb 11, 2009 10:45 pm

Tish, our World Class rep, said she caught a break, and as a result we were able to obtain a firkin of cask-conditioned Bell's HopSlam.

I've learned not to ask questions, just sign the check, look the other way, and have an alibi ready and waiting.

NABC's beer manager Mike says there's no room for storage (we already have three regular kegs of HopSlam for Gravity Head, not to mention dozens of others in the queue), and so the firkin will be tapped tomorrow, Thursday the 12th.

That's the right call, because in dispensing it now, Mike knows you will be able to have some, and there won't be an opportunity for me to spirit the firkin to the next Gang of Seven/Bank Street organizational "meeting."

I recommend not waiting until Friday.

No! I have tests on Friday, and I'm already skipping a wine tasting on Thursday because I really shouldn't be drinking (or doing anything but studying for that matter) tomorrow. Ah well, what harm is a little insult on top of injury? I suppose I'll be magnanimous about my loss though and tell my friends about it anyway.

If by some sort of divine intervention there happens to be any left of it on Friday though, could you tell us about it on here Roger? I'll definitely head your way after my tests are over if that's the case.

I will, but gently ... don't get your hopes up. Apologies for springing this at the last minute, but sometimes we consciously try to be unpredictable.

HopSlam on draft is outstanding, so I can only imagine how good this is going to be.

I can only imagine because I have to work Thursday night. Oh well...

Oh wow, we had this at Christmas when we were in Michigan. You all are in for a treat! We were able to try the HopSlam on cask at our favorite pub in Battle Creek.

Sadly, when I tried to take my husband to Bell's (my family lives in Battle Creek, next to Kalamazoo) they were closed because they were sponsoring a concert at the State Theater. I think my husband just wanted some Bell's goodies from the store so he could have bragging rights with his work buddies.

It is sad that you can get great beer in that part of Michigan from The Dark Horse, Arcadia, and Bell's, but so little good food.

Roger,

I'm sure I can find some storage room here at the store for the cask if you like... then it can be opened at a better time for everyone.... or at least until you leave the parking lot after dropping it off

At a time when (IMHO) much of the craft brewing industry seem to have become obsessed with "gimmicks" in an attempt to reinvent the wheel (with mixed success) this is one beer that hits a grand SLAM home run...cask conditioned or not. Also available (unconditioned) at Za's Pizza and your favorite Liquor Barn at a whopping 17.99 a sixer. Worth it ?...you'll have to be the judge of that.

I'm impressed you were able to type this without any mistakes after 3 of those... Well done.

It was still pouring when I left at ten, but hit very hard tonight. I'll report back on Friday.

Thanks for keeping us posted Roger, you're a true people's publican. Anyway, I think regardless of he oaked Hopslam status I'll be heading your way around 3 tomorrow. After 6 1/2 hours of tests, I'm really going to need a beer.
