WEATHER Info

by Ed Vermillion » Tue Feb 10, 2009 6:40 pm

We monitor the weather very closely in my office and I thought I would share this information from the National Weather Service conference call from this afternoon. Early information will help you prepare:

"Wednesday will be an adventure. As pressure gradient tightens immensly (between Low pressure approaching from the West and a High pressure system of the Atlantic coast) in the morning, winds will increase in strength. Winds will likey be 20-30 mph SUSTAINED with gusts to 45 mph possible.....By late morning and through the early afternoon winds will likely be in the 30-40 mph SUSTAINED with gusts of 55 mph or higher. Given these winds and the massive amount of tree damage from the recent ice storm will likely result in power outages across the area again..........As if the winds were not enough we will also have to deal with severe convection....a fast moving squall line that should cruise through the area during the day (prediction sometime between 11 AM and 2 PM at this time) damaging winds in excess of 60 mph are probable. Winds will still be strong after the front passes through until the early evening. If we get any clearing early tomorrow morning the atmosphere could destabilize and the storms we do get could be more severe than predicted."

That is straight from the NWS here in Louisville as of 3:30 this afternoon. Please keep an eye open for the weather in your area and be safe.

....on the bright side, I might not have to go to the gym today!

Seriously, the thought of high winds after those ice storms terrifies me. All those weakened branches are going to come crashing down, and folks are going to be without power yet again. >.<

Got any updates, Ed? I'm looking at the NOAA page but wonder if you guys have inside stuff. Right now, things aren't looking bad, but I know that can change in a hurry.

Thanks, Ed. I know I've seen it all over the news, but this coming from you, I will now cancel the appointment I was planning for around 1pm.

Be safe all!

NOAA Special Weather Statement 10:16 a.m.

by Robin Garr » Wed Feb 11, 2009 11:41 am

This was just posted on the NOAA site a short while ago ... most current info available, I guess ...

...HIGH WIND WARNING IN EFFECT...

WINDS WERE INCREASING ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL INDIANA AND CENTRAL
KENTUCKY AT MID MORNING AS LOW PRESSURE STRENGTHENED IN THE SAINT
LOUIS VICINITY. WINDS WERE GUSTING IN EXCESS OF 40 MPH AT MANY
LOCATIONS WEST OF INTERSTATE 65 WITH A MAX GUST OF 51 MPH AT
WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY IN BOWLING GREEN.

WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE AS DEEPENING LOW PRESSURE REACHES
CENTRAL ILLINOIS AND WESTERN INDIANA BY MIDDAY. IN ADDITION...A
NARROW LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS IS EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO THAT PART OF
SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY...WEST OF INTERSTATE 65 BY MIDDAY. DAMAGING
WINDS WILL LIKELY BE FOCUSED JUST AHEAD AND ALONG OF THE LINE.

TREES ARE ESPECIALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO HIGH WINDS WITH DANGLING AND
BROKEN TREE LIMBS. ALSO...MANY TREES ARE LEANING AND ENCASED IN
SATURATED GROUND WHICH MAKE THEM MORE VULNERABLE TO THE HIGH
WINDS. GRADIENT WIND GUSTS OF 50 TO 60 MPH WILL BRING DOWN
FRACTURED TREE LIMBS AND MAY UPROOT OR BRING DOWN LEANING
TREES...CAUSING POWER OUTAGES AS TREES AND TREE LIMBS HIT POWER
LINES.

TRAVELERS IN HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES WILL BE IMPACTED BY THE WIND AS
WELL...ESPECIALLY THOSE TRAVELING ON EAST-WEST INTERSTATES SUCH AS
I-64...AND THE BLUEGRASS AND CUMBERLAND PARKWAYS. STRONG SOUTH
WINDS WILL CREATE A DANGEROUS CROSS WIND FOR THESE DRIVERS.

NOON UPDATE

(THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT)...

NO CHANGES TO THE FCST EXCEPT FOR THE NEW TORNADO WATCH FOR THE
ENTIRE CWA...FOR A NARROW LINE OF THIN CONVECTION THAT HAS WEAK
THERMODYNAMICS...BUT HIGH KINEMATICS. PAH IS ISSUING SVRS FOR THE
SRN EDGE OF THE FAST MOVING LINE...WITH EMBEDDED BOOKEND VORTICIES
WHICH COULD CAUSE ISOL QUICK TORNADO SPINUPS AS THE LINE MOVES
EAST. THERE IS A STRONG POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS WITH TREE AND
PROPERTY DAMAGE ALONG WITH SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES...BUT LACK OF
INSTABILITY COULD LIMIT THE POTENTIAL FOR MUCH LIGHTNING...BUT EVEN
A LINE OF SHRA WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO MIX DOWN 60+ MPH WINDS.

GRADIENT WINDS WILL CONTINUE WITH 25-35 MPH AND GUSTS TO 50+.
THESE WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE AS THE FRONT APPROACHES AND BE
STRONGEST WITH AND AFTER A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS THAT WILL MOVE INTO
THE WESTERN COUNTIES THROUGH NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS...THROUGH I-65
FROM 1PM-3PM EST AND THROUGH INTERSTATE 75 230PM-5PM EST.

THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT...

WINDS WILL REMAIN VERY STRONG BEHIND THE THIN SQUALL LINE AS DECENT
COLD AIR ADVECTION AND RESULTING SUBSIDENCE WILL MIX WINDS OF 25-40
MPH AND GUSTS OVER 50 MPH TO THE SURFACE INTO THIS EVENING. TIMING
OF THE HIGH WIND WARNING COVERS THIS WELL AND WILL CONTINUE THE
HIGHLIGHT THROUGH 10PM EST WEDNESDAY AS IT CURRENTLY EXISTS.

WINDS DECREASE QUICKLY AFTER 10PM EST BUT REMAIN IN THE 15-30 MPH
RANGE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.

And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Latest information on Severe Weather, Watches and Warnings
(10:00 AM ET) This was shared by Louisville Metro Emergency Management from an EM conference call update this morning. The NWS indicated that 1st this is not "an Ike winds" type event. The forecasted sustained winds of 20mph-40mph, with a potential for gusts to60mph in the afternoon period become much more a problem because of the dangling limbs, weakened/leaning trees, and the saturated ground from our most recent severe weather of January, 2009. The potential for our severe weather will be in advance of and behind a front anticipated in the 1:00pm range. The forecast indicates the potential for severe weather is greater for areas east of 65, with Lexington mentioned more at risk than Louisville.
Northern Kentucky
...HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 5 AM EST THURSDAY... LOW PRESSURE WILL STRENGTHEN AS IT MOVES INTO THE LOWER GREAT LAKES TODAY AND TONIGHT. AS THE LOW TRACKS NORTH OF THE REGION...A COLD FRONT WILL QUICKLY SWEEP THROUGH THE OHIO VALLEY THIS AFTERNOON. THIS FRONT MAY BE ACCOMPANIED BY STRONG THUNDERSTORMS...WITH THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE DAMAGING WINDS. BEHIND THE FRONT...A VERY STRONG PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL RESULT IN WIND GUSTS OF 45 TO 55 MPH TONIGHT...WITH GUSTS AS HIGH AS 60 MPH POSSIBLE. A RECENT ICE STORM ACROSS PARTS OF THE AREA...AND SATURATED GROUND FROM RAIN AND MELTING SNOW...HAVE LEFT MANY TREES SUSCEPTIBLE TO DOWNED LIMBS AND UPROOTING. AS A RESULT...HIGH WINDS MAY RESULT IN SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES. A HIGH WIND WARNING MEANS A HAZARDOUS HIGH WIND EVENT IS EXPECTED OR OCCURRING...WITH SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF AT LEAST 40 MPH OR GUSTS OF AT LEAST 58 MPH. ANYONE WITH OUTDOOR INTERESTS WILL BE AFFECTED BY HIGH WINDS...AND TRAVELERS WILL FIND NAVIGATING THROUGH THE HIGH WINDS DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY THOSE TRAVELING IN HIGHER PROFILE VEHICLES.

This is what we have info wise on our end...

Sorry Guys, went in early and have been busy today. As of now I think we are winding down. I know that we have numerous outages again but thankfully no injuries. We'll be cleaning up again for a bit but hopefully not as long. LGE is jumping on these pretty well. Please stay safe.

Update: As of 8:30 PM we have 42,000 without power. Hope everyone is OK.

Old Louisville (4th and Oak, looking west.) You can see why a large area lost power.
