Flabby's

by carla griffin » Sun Feb 08, 2009 10:43 pm

My brother and sister-in-law flew in tonight from Carmel, California. They were tired and weary and wanted a good fish sandwich or some home made fried chicken for dinner. They wanted a neighborhood joint, very casual and just something down home. Irish Rover is closed on Sunday (bummer) so as I was trying to get an idea as to exactly what they wanted I asked, "Like Flabby's?" "Perfect!" my brother answered.
5 of us went out, had 3 orders of fish, fried chicken, chicken wings, hot pretzels (with some wonderful wasabi hot, brown mustard), fried cabbage, 4 cole slaw, red cabbage, 4 orders of rings, some german potato salad, 2 pitchers of beer, 2 colas all for less than $70. And we brought home a box of chicken to boot. My brother was in heaven. There was nothing fancy about anything we ordered but everything was grand. The young man behind the bar (I'm sorry I didn't get his name) was terrific. We paid and thanked him for a great meal that hit the spot perfectly. He generously gave my brother a Flabby's hat which will, no doubt, become his new favorite hat. We had not just a great meal but a memorable evening.

That sounds great. I haven't been back to Flabby's since I moved out of Germantown. Did someone say they have chicken livers on the menu?

I love chicken livers. Nobody else I know does, though :(

We should do a Flabby's/Nach Bar/Seidenfaden's offline. Or we should organize an offline for the Spring Schnitzelburg Walk - Jessie? Do you know the date?

Carla,

We were out and about today (Sunday) and wanted to try somewhere we hadn't yet been for lunch...How about RichO's ? OK, so we drove to New Albany only to discover they are closed on Sunday. No big deal, we'll go to Flabby's...We got there about 2-ish and the place looked like it was locked up. The "Open" sign was not lit and there were no sign of any lights in the place. We assumed they were closed as well. I guess we were wrong. Darn.

Note that the fried chicken is available only on the weekend.

All you can eat chicken wings on Tuesday. Livers and gizzards always.

Cheap German schnitzels in the evenings.

Don't know what time they open on Sundays.

I called Sunday around 5 and got no answer. I assumed it was because they were busy. Their website said they opened at 1PM . We called later (6ish?) got someone that said they'd be opened til 9. There seemed to only be one guy there (maybe a cook in the back) running the show and bar-keeping. I encourage you to try again. I'm glad we persisted.

I love chicken livers too!

That would be a fun offline.

I'd be down for a Flabby's offline (esp. since I live on the same block!) but please don't do it the same day as the Schnitzelburg Walk. It will likely be way too crowded.

I have to throw in a good word for their limburger and onion sandwich on rye. Its not for everyone, but if you like pungent food then it is definitely the sandwich for you. Also, I really enjoy their jalapeno cheese bites.

Hey Marsha, the date is not set yet for the Schnitzelburg Walk-I will ask at the next board meeting and see what we are planning.

Maybe we should go the day of the Dainty competition in July!

Also, Seidenfaden's seems like kind of a long walk. Flabby's and Nachbar would be great, though (walking after eating at Flabby's might help, actually).

That date I do know-the 39th annual Dainty contest is July 27.

Also, you might consider a Checks/Zeppelin Cafe/Flabby's/Nachbar offline. The Zeppelin's pretzels with beer cheese are awesome!
