Ruth Hunt Candies
Louisville, Ky.
A host of readers from Kentucky insisted that I had not truly lived until I sampled the famous Blue Monday bar, made by Ruth Hunt Candies. The Blue Monday is the only bar I know of that boasts a "pulled cream candy" covered in milk or dark chocolate. The filling is similar in consistency to a butter mint, but lighter and crispier. Can I truthfully declare that the Blue Monday revived my life? Not really. It's more in the category of an acquired taste. Then again, Ruth Hunt's Woodford Reserve Bourbon Balls -- while probably not appropriate for kids -- hit the spot.
Schimpff's Confectionery
Jeffersonville, Ind.
Back when Gustav Schimpff opened for business in 1891, most confectioners were mom-and-pop operations. Schimpff's is one of the few that has remained more or less loyal to that model. The treat recommended by readers is the Modjeska (named for the Polish actress Helena Modjeska), a succulent caramel-covered marshmallow, often enrobed in milk or dark chocolate. The company also makes splendid hard candies, most famously cinnamon red hots, though I found their emerald green anise drops more intoxicating.
