Thuy Van Cafe

I had stopped off at this family-run Vietnamese restaurant when they first opened and inquired if they had tofu pho to which the reply was negative. The place was also a big grubby so I hadn't been back since. So I decided to stop in for lunch recently for a change. I was very pleasantly surprised. The place was remodeled, I am told 4 months ago, and really looked sharp. It was well painted, nice new tables, and colorful ceilings. It also seats 80 people or so--pretty big place. I ordered a tofu spring roll, tofu pho, and hot tea (Jasmine). Everything was good and the people were quite friendly. In fact I was stuffed from the generous portion of pho. My bill was $10.60 before tip. In addition, I enjoy "taking a trip and never leaving the Ville!" In other words, I was the only non-Asian in the place and the television was blasting a DVD of the Vietnamese version of "Sabado Gigante." Needless to say Thuy Van Cafe will be added to my rotation of southend Vietnamese haunts. It is located at 5600 National Turnpike.

Thuy Van is fantastic......for those that don't know it's on National Tpk, by Sysco...last time I went it was cash only (so you don't get caught in limbo)....service was a tad bit slow, but I wasn't shocked as its a small family joint. Word is, it is Michael Ton's (Basa) for authentic vietnamese. I actually ate with him there, and he ordered for us...it was simply amazing, and it has now become a regular lunch spot for us.

I've had dinner there and it's the real deal. There was some struggle with language but we got past that without much trouble.
