Bistro New Albany and NA downtown revival in the C-J today.

by Roger A. Baylor » Sun Apr 29, 2007 10:43 am

Congrats Dave - good press, and even better to get the word out about downtown NA.

Downtown New Albany shows signs of vitality; Restaurant, other businesses a step in the right direction, by Dale Moss.

Congrats to Dave, but ... not to rain on anybody's parade, but Gannett strikes again: Dale's column runs only in the Hoosier edition. It's not in the newspaper on the Kentucky side of the river.

True about Dale's column, but we have the smart and savvy readers here, eh?

Of course! I was just expressing regret that Gannett's "Great Wall" policy prevents Louisville readers from catching a glimpse of action on the Sunny Side.

Absolutely, Robin. We're on the same page (of the Indiana edition).

While we're here, know that the Speakeasy jazz club (downtown NA on State Street, west of Schmitt Furniture) looks to be open the first week of June. I've been inside the old building, and let me tell you that the remodeling job is superlative -- and there's still space for lease on the top two floors. There'll be food, music and beer (a couple of NABC ales, I hope).

Yes, it is regrettable that the C-J does that. It would be great if the entire Louisville Metro area could act in a more cohesive manner. Just because a river separates us doesn't mean we aren't all in this local economy/culture together.

Congrats David on the write-up.

And Roger, a new jazz club sounds really cool. NA is really taking off, eh?

We're trying, all right. To be chronically undervalued is to at least retain the chance of surprising the pundits, and that's the aim.

Roger, does the new club have a dance floor? Our dance instructor in Louisville phoned the other day to say friends are opening a new dance bar in New Albany in June, and so I'm thinking it's likely the one. Good news for sure.

Nice article and picture Mr. Clancy.(Even better than the one for the LEO Chef Challenge). As a fellow Hoosier, It makes me proud to know that someone else out there realizes that before too long... Downtown New Albany is another Frankfort Ave. waiting to happen. Forward thinking people like yourself(your wife, and Mr. Baylor and others)are on the front end of something that most certainly will become a destination in itself someday. It won't happen overnight, but the foundation is there and I wish you the best of luck in your continued success!

N'albany has always had a certain 8) to it but this would be the 8) est of all!

I can't seem to talk my bride into moving so I will share my dream home with the forum.

Dance floor: While I'm not certain of the Speakeasy's aims, certainly it could be set up that way, so I'd say yes. Beautiful restored hardwood floors are a prime asset.

Dream house: That's a good one, and I'm glad you've drawn attention to the historical properties website:

http://www.historicnewalbany.com/

The house next door to ours is on the site. We're to the left in the photo:

In the business sense, there are things I'd like to do downtown, but until they materialize, it's enough to have NABC beers on tap at the new establishments. My theory is that the type of people who like local craft brews tend to be representative of the same demographic needed to live, work and invest in downtown.

Put a few pints in 'em and maybe they'll buy into it ...

Yes, one of many dream homes I have but that one is THE dream home for a firefighter. I'll poke around and see the new stuff tomorrow as I'm taking the bride to Lunch at Bistro NA. Looking forward to it.
