Sunday Ideas

by Kris Billiter » Tue Feb 03, 2009 3:55 pm

Hello all. Hope you all have survived the storm. I am having an event this weekend with my students at church where they will be staying at church member's homes for the weekend. We usually conclude these weekends by taking the volunteers and host homes out to lunch after church on Sunday. We will have a wide range of people with various tastes, and can't go completely overboard on price. We probably all won't get there until 12:45 and probably won't want to be there all afternoon. The group could total about 12-15. Any thoughts?

My number one pick is Havana Rumba if you're not too far from it. I've taken a large number of people there over the years, several of which were picky eaters. No one has ever left unhappy. Just let them know ahead of time so they can have a table ready for a crowd of that size.

Toast on Market is always a good brunch location, if you can get a reservation ahead of time. Otherwise, the wait is quite long.

Also, I tried out the brunch buffet at Ramsi's a while back. While not necessarily authentic ethnic cuisine, it did have a good variety of vegetarian and vegan options. I tried a little bit of almost everything, and honestly none of it let me down except for the black bean patties (they were a little dry). The plantain french toast was quite delicious. I think it was around $12-13 a person, with milk and juice included.

Dollar for dollar, Dak Shin and Bombay Grill are your best bets, provided everyone likes Indian food. The buffet really isn't very spicy (heat), but it does have a lot of interesting spices that some people may not care for. However, I'm sure there's at least several dishes on either buffet that anyone will enjoy. Just steer them towards the chicken tikka masala or tandoori chicken. Vegetable pakoras with tamarind chutney also generally go over well. Plus, they can easily have tables set up for a large crowd if you just let them know ahead of time. Our offline had 16 people there on Saturday, and there was still room for more.

Dim sum at Jade Palace is another great Sunday pick. Very affordable, and provided the group is even minimally adventurous, they'll love pointing and picking small dishes from the carts that come rolling around the room. Lots of the dishes are dumplings and crunchy fried goodies, and the servers are generally careful about warning the wary away from chicken feet, tripe and other more challenging goodies.

Cafe Lou Lou in Saint Matthew's is reasonably priced has a very casual atmosphere and you can make a reservation ahead of time for your group, they don't have breakfast items though if that's what you're looking for. On other nice choice is North End Cafe, they have both breakfast items and sandwiches available at that time of day (try the trout hash!), they also take reservations. Of course as you know Louisville has many great timing locations that would work.

Nira,

We were looking for you last night when North End fell through, but we couldn't locate you.
Could you give us the current address so we can make it out next time we're in Louisville?

Sure Fey,
The address is
Bazo's Fresh Mexican Grill
4014 Dutchman's Lane
Louisville KY 40207
502-899-9600

From 264/Watterson Expressway take exit 18B for Breckenridge North. Turn right on Dutchman's lane. Stay in the right lane. Pass Dupont circle. Turn into the parking lot right before Skyline Chili. Once you park you can come in through two different entrances. You can either walk to the front of the building that faces Dutchmans and use the main door or you will see a set of glass double doors(there is a Bazo's sign on the glass doors) on the side of the building that will lead you into a hallway and use the entry doors from the hallway.
It is a little difficult to find us but I hope these directions help. Please give us a call if you need further assistance.

Thanks
