Sausage Gravy & Biscuits

by Dyan W » Mon Feb 02, 2009 6:21 pm

Do you know THE PLACE to get the best Sausage Gravy & Biscuits? We want to know which area restaurant you think has the best for our upcoming competition. The restaurants with the most nominations will be invited to participate in the competition at French Lick Resort on Saturday, Feb. 21.

French Lick is cooking up a Southern specialties food fair that day from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Guests are invited to browse, and sample a variety of regional country favorites featuring “good ole” Southern favorites like country ham and grits. The highlight of the show will be the “Sausage Gravy & Biscuits” competition at 3 p.m. in the Clifton Ballroom.

Post your nominations here or email me at dduncan@frenchlick.com

Among the locally-based restaurants, I've always like Bristol Bar & Grille's Biscuits & Gravy that are usually included with their Sunday Brunch menu; but [although it's a chain] I have to confess that Bob Evans' probably has the best I've tasted -- large, fluffy biscuits with a flavorful sausage gravy -- made with lots of sausage pieces.

Sweet & Savory has the best I've tried in town. Each of the components (biscuit, gravy and sausage) is top notch. I particularly like the sausage as it is plentiful, but not overwhelming and it has a wonderful black pepper bite.

In my opinion the two best in town are at North End Cafe and Lynn's. I haven't tried the Bristol's so I can't comment on their's but most of the others I've tried locally don't have enough sausage nor pepper for my liking or they're too salty. As far as chains go Mimi's is pretty good (much better than Bob Evans who owns them). Of course the best in my opinion is the biscuits and gravy I make.

I had Brunch at the Patron on Frankfort Ave this past Sunday. I happened to have the biscuits and gravy and they were amazing.. They used chorizo for sausage and what seemed to me to be homemade biscuits from scratch. The gravy was the right consistency and the chorizo worked big time! Throw in a couple of the tastiest sourdough pancakes and eggs and I was in heaven.

Gotta say, the Patron is my new favorite Sunday brunch destination. I would argue that their Biscuits and gravy were as good as any I've had.

Oh my gosh, that sounds like heaven. I used to do Sunday brunch at Azelia's, but they closed; then I did brunch at Volare's, but they stopped serving brunch. I'll have to try Patron's. Thanks for the heads up, Christopher.

Bob Evan's may be the best. I know, I know, this is not about chain restaurants, it is about local eateries. However, when someone does something well, please don't begrudge!

Wagner's Pharmacy on S.4th Street are going to be up on the ranking list when it comes to the locals on the biscuit and gravy craves. If I remember right they were recognized on one of our local medias recently.

Anyway, I have been there several times, gotta give them a try

IMHO, Sweet and Savory and North End, hands down.

I've never had them, but those that have will fight to defend Wagner's. I need to try them.

I've had Wagners and wasn't that all impressed. Reminded me a little of DQ's B&G.

Bob Evans is hard to beat.
