The Best Hot Wings in Town?

by Bryan R » Sun Feb 01, 2009 5:45 pm

With today's Super Bowl about to kick off in a couple hours, I'm beginning to feel the urge to eat more than my fair share of hot wings. Certainly chicken wings are not at the top of the list when it comes to fine dining fare, but spicy wings and a cold beer can cure what ails you every now and then. Some of my favorite wings locations are Rumor's and Hooter's (no offense intended to the kinder sex). I can choke down BWW's on occasion, but prefer crispy skin over gobs of sauce.

So to you truly food minded of Louisville and surrounding areas, where can I find a better wing?

Thanks!
Bryan

I have heard over and over that The Backdoor has the best wings in the city.

We can't claim knowledge of every "wing joint" in town but by far the best we've had -so far- have been at Turkey Joe's on Hurstbourne. Great "classic" buffalo wings...Crispy (not "rubbery"), a nice selection of sauces to please every palette and best of all they are only 50 cents each the entire month of Feb. I'll give Joe's wings a solid "94" on Robin's scale.

I can't miss this (or any) opportunity to diss Buffalo Wild Wings...I had 18 of my students become very ill after eating at a BW3 (in another city) and when they contacted the regional manager (out of concern that this was part of a bigger problem) they were told "so sue me" and the guy hung up on them. So in addition to having universally crappy wings as well as an "ambiance" suitable only for the "frat" crowd they also have at least one regional manager who needs a few lessons on how to treat customers...especially customers who spent the night hugging the toilet after eating their food.

Sorry...we were talking about Wings in Louisville...

I had never been to Hooters until a few months ago when my wife insisted we stop in to try the wings. She really likes them and insists we go every few weeks or so. It's tough, but one does what one has to in order to maintain harmony.

Zeppelin Cafe in Germantown, caddy-corner from Check's, has some of the best wings I've had. They get their sauce from Anchor Bar in New York and use a light breading. The heat factor is pretty tame, but the flavor is on point. The price is also astounding at $5.95 for a dozen. I have also been pleased with everything else that I have tried on the menu, although I have a hard time resisting the wings.

I keep hearing a lot about the two "kings" places on broadway. One is around Floyd(?) and Broadway called Chicked King, the other is at 22nd and Broadway, called Kings. Both reputedly have the best wings in town and serve hella-southern fast food, like gizzards, cabbage, fried fish, sweet rolls, etc... I haven't been to either, but they keep coming up in conversations.

The East Broadway Chicken King is at Clay & Broadway. It's a favorite amongst a lot of the EMTs as it is quick, open late, and close to the hospitals. I've had quite a few partners drag me there to grab lunch. It's not bad, especially for the prices. Here's a link to the menu (I've had to pull it up plenty of times for our dispatch): http://www.chickenkingoflouisville.com/Menu.html. Just like Indi's on Broadway, they only take cash.

According to my gf who is the wing fan of the two of us, Zeppelin's wings are very good. However, she still stands by Flabby's wings, we probably go there more often. On Tuesday Flabby's runs a all-you-can-eat special for $8.25 (comes with a gigantic side of refillable fries, too, so that's a pretty good bargain).

I don't like my buffalo wings with breading (yeach). Zeppelin breads theirs? What about Flabby's? To tell you the truth, I'm pretty happy with Wing Zone mediums.

Anderson,

I've used the Anchor Bar brand sauces (original, hotter and suicidal - available at many local grocers) on my wings for years...and loved them. Recently I went to pick up a couple of bottles and noticed the color of the product as well as the labels had changed. After a little investigating I determined that the recipes have indeed changed (the "Original" is now a yucky looking orange color) and that the sauce is no longer made and/or distributed by the same company as the "Original" sauces. All of this may be the result of the Anchor Bar "concept" being franchised. Just thought I'd mention this in case you noticed a change in the wings at the Zeppelin.

BTW, for wing aficionados, here is a link to the story about the Anchor Bar being franchised:
