Nasty salad spoils CJ's dinner at RockWall

by Robin Garr » Sat Apr 28, 2007 10:10 am

Marty found a lot to like at RockWall in Floyds Knobs above New Albany in this week's 545-word CJ review, but a nasty salad spoiled his enjoyment, prompting a 2 1/2 star rating and a surprisingly negative headline from Scene's usually see-no-evil headline writers. I'm a little puzzled, though, as he wrote, "<I>On a couple of recent dishes, we encountered wavering quality - some dishes were outrageously good, while others were embarrassingly bad.</i>" Fair enough. But the only dish that he actually singled out was a Cobb salad. As he describes it, it <i>was</i> embarrassingly bad. But, except for a brief reference to sugar snap peas "dripping" oil, which sounds imperfect but hardly embarrassing, it appears that the only real miss was the salad. The headlne and the "embarrassingly bad" reference led me to expect worse.

Whatever. I wouldn't rule out RockWall, a place that I've always found well above average, on the basis of this review. But I might avoid that salad. ;)

We were just in there and had a truely wonderful meal. We did the field green salad, not the cobb, and it might have been one of the best salads I've had in a long while.

Rockwall.

If I hadn't known the rating before reading the review, I definitely would've thought at least 3 stars would be given. For a less than great salad and some peas that were oily, and with multiple visits, a 2.5 is rather on the harsh side. But it's Marty's review and he gave the rating he thought was fair. It's too bad he doesn't/can't post here. It'd be great to pick his brain on this one.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

I agree. We miss the guy. I'm figuring that Gannett discourages that.

We, too, were there recently. We agree with Amy about the quality field green salad, and Marty was right about that outstanding plantation salmon. The crab cakes were a very good start (we shared), and my wife loved her baked cornish hen. Service was top notch. In all, an excellent (3+) evening.
