Dragon Cafe "Tzan mei"

"To praise and appreciate"

Dragon Cafe in Prospect has been dishing up some outstanding chinese going on two months now. Located in a newer commercial strip just across the Oldham-Jefferson County line at 13206 W Highway 42 in Oldham County. Just come up the hill and look to your right as you pass the Prospect Chevron and you will see it tucked in next door to the Kentucky Farm Bureau office. The space is small inside with just five 4 tops available to eat in. Geared to the take away market it's doing a booming business, although dining in is fun for watching the chinese language programs running on the television.

The usual suspects are all well represented with some remarkable newcomers that are worth mentioning: Scallion pancakes, roast pork fried rice, beef fried rice, vegetable fried rice all by the pint or quart. Something new for me are the Chow Mei Fun additions: thin rice noodles stir fried with your choice of vegetables, roast pork, chicken, beef or shrimp. Singapore Mei Fun is outstanding and is loaded with all of the above and cooked in a maylasian style curry sauce.

Some standouts for mains are: Bourbon chicken, broccoli with garlic sauce, double cooked pork, kung pao beef, hot & spicy shredded beef, bean curd home style, bean curd with garlic sauce, roast pork with cashew and mushrooms, mongolian beef, szechuan pork, hunan beef. You can get any meat or vegetables in their great curry sauce.

Dragon Cafe Specialties is a separate list with some notable, higher priced offerings. Some of those include Sizzling beef & scallops, seafood pan fried noodles, subgum wonton and Seven Stars around the Moon.

Lunch specials are served from 11:00 to 3:00 PM daily. They include 3 vegetable dishes, 16 chicken dishes, 7 pork, 8 beef and 5 shrimp dishes all served with either pork fried rice or steamed sticky rice.

Drinks are bottled water and sodas with free hot tea if you are waiting for your order. The people are incredibly friendly, the service fast and they are a welcome addition the the Prospect dining milieu.

Since it sounds as though they have (limited) dine-in, I'll definitely give them a try....but probably a little too far afield for carry-out back to my hovel on the other side of Oldham County....

Duncan and I enjoy eating in just to watch the interesting programs they air. Just order at the counter and they bring it out to you at your table. It's no frill decore and good food.

I recall dining a few times in New York's Chinatown....the best places tended to be the most non-descript...

Thanks, Ed. Had no idea it was out there. Will have to give it a try.
