55 High-ABV American (?) Beers

by Marsha L. » Mon Jan 19, 2009 10:47 am

I stumbled across this list of high-ABV percentage American microbrewed beers. Judging by the "country of origin" column in the table, these are NOT all American beers (although many of them are). After reading and re-reading, I think the guy is saying these are all beers you can easily PURCHASE in the U.S.

Also, his graphic is not a photo of the beers he's listing - it's just a photo of a bunch of beers from everywhere.

Finally, I guess I wasn't aware of Founder's Brewing Company (Kentucky Breakfast Stout), so I looked it up thinking I was discovering another Kentucky microbrewery - only to find they are located in Grand Rapids, MI :/

I wonder what else this guy writes, because his work here is not very good. Most of the beers on the list are limited release seasonal beers and are not readily available. Some of them are very regional as well, or only sold at the brewery. It looks like the writer pulled the list from either Ratebeer or Beer Advocate and did not research it very well. A great example of this is the Trappist Westvleteren 12. It is only sold at the brewery, a limit of 3 cases at a time and is not supposed to be resold.

A few are available in our market though and several are around all year round. Stick around for a few more weeks and we'll get into New Albanian's Gravity Head for a true list of "Beers that will knock you flat on your ass"

My sentiments exactly Shawn! The 120 minute and Raison d'Extra both beat all of the beers on the list by a few ABV points.

What about Samichlaus? One of the original high gravity beers!!! I know some have cited the lack of DFH beers, but really? No World Wide Stout? I mean, it is merely a shell of what it used to be now, but come on. It still merits a mention. I wonder if this guy had ever heard of any of these beers before he wrote this.

P.S. He did happen to include on of my favorite names for a beer...Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout. Never had it, but the name is fantastic. The label art is pretty sweet too.

Gravity Head is a little over a month away (February 27):

The link is to a blog post where I'm beginning the task of culling and collating the list. I don't have all the ABVs yet, but will chip away at it over the next couple of weeks until the paint dries.

This year's theme: The Liver Olympics.
