Sushi on Preston

by Dana McMahan » Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:19 pm

I want to get the word out about the new sushi restaurant on Preston for a very selfish reason: I want it to stay in business so I have a place to eat within walking distance of my house (that's not KFC or Whitecastle).

It's owned and run by Song Kim, who also runs Bendoya downtown. He opened up shortly before Christmas and in the maybe 10 times we've been, we've only seen other customers once. The sushi is perfectly fine -- it's no Maido, but I'm just thrilled that it's in my neighborhood. Mon-Thur sushi, entrees and drinks are half price. I really want him to stay put (and I hope he succeeds for his own sake, not just to fill my sushi cravings  ), so if you're in the neighborhood, please pay Oasis a visit. It's at 3311 Preston (near Audubon Park).

Where is it exactly? Half price deals sound great.

And by the way - you been about ten times since Christmas  ? That's pretty good loyalty.

It's just about five minutes off Eastern (not that you can turn left there), on the left before Value City (well, where it used to be).

Yeah, we went a little overboard the first few weeks. Who can resist half-price sushi? :D

Near nuts and stuff? Or Horner Novelty? I'll check out some half priced sushi, for sure.

Oldham County needs sushi....and I don't mean that stuff they serve at "Jumbo Buffet"...

The one time I went to Jumbo Buffet with some friends, I mustered my fortitude and decided to try their sushi. The fish (which was raw) was around room temperature. Needless to say I didn't finish it.

As for Oasis though, I'll definitely have to check it out sometime.

Im shocked Oldham doesnt have sushi, bc by my estimate there are easily 20 sushi bars in the Louisville metro area, and maybe another 10-15 places with sushi on the menu. I went to oasis tonite. half priced drinks on mondays. half priced everything 530-630 on the weekdays. There was only one other table there, but the owner was from bendoya and very nice. He has a very apt chef who has worked about half the places in town. The food is cheaper and as good as Sapporo. The front of the building looks shady, it is near thorntons, but the inside is nice, and they even have private rooms for karaoke at night.

It's by the novelty shop.

I'm glad you went and liked it! (Though a little dismayed you found it shady-looking on the outside.) They've actually done some work on Preston Hwy to clean it up a bit. Oasis going in is (I hope! and maybe only wishful thinking) only the first of a number of improvements to the stretch of Preston near my house. That's part of why I really want him to succeed. If sushi works on Preston, who knows, maybe we could get coffee! Or I could dream big and picture a Paul's Produce :)

Dining habits in the OC are pretty mainstream, and attempts to introduce more upscale/eclectic restaurants out here have met with mixed results....a sushi menu might gain a limited foothold, but initially it will probably have to be integrated with a more recognizable menu -- e.g., something along the lines of what Cafe Mimosa did -- offer a primarily Chinese menu, with a small sushi menu on the side and see how it goes.

We tried Oasis tonight. I agree that the outside is a little shabby, and I also thought that the interior had a strange, slightly medicinal smell to it. But the sushi was quite good, and we were even presented with a complimentary Hawaiian crunch roll. Unfortunately, there was only one other table occupied at 8:00 on a Friday night, so I'm not sure how long they'll be able to hang in there. But I hope they do, because they're an asset to the neighborhood! I'll spread the word to my Germantown friends.

Sushi on Preston and half price specials? That's all I need to hear! I moved to Old Louisville recently to be closer to work (which is on Preston), but keep finding myself driving back to my old neighborhood of Crescent Hill because of all the places I miss. Any recommendations for things to try there? I'm working the night shift right now so it would be easy to swing in and grab something to bring for dinner this week...

There's already great coffee on Preston, it's just on the other side of Eastern Pkwy at Sunergos. There's also the best and cheapest haircut in town right across the street at Bill's.
