Lasagne or Lasagna

by Dan Thomas » Fri Jan 16, 2009 3:56 am

Which spelling do you prefer?

A silly question..However which one is most appropriate?

It's a quandry to me and need help to figure it out!

Lasagna is singular. Lasagne is plural. Lasagna for a pan or plate of the stuff. Lasagne for a stack of wide noodles.

That's pretty much what I said, but you said it shorter, and I've only got one Italian grandmother. ;)

The wiki (yes, there seems to be a wiki for everything) and dictionary are clear as mud on the subject, suggesting they're interchangeable. I've always assumed the "a" spelling to be correct.

By the way, thanks for this post! We're having lasagna for dinner tonight. It's wicked cold up here (actually 2° warmer here than Louisville), and nice to have the oven on. Ayuh.

Kind of looks like the spelling is a no brainer! The spelling ended with "a" is the unanimous choice. Wonder where anybody ever got the idea of using an "e"?

Read the thread: Lasagne is the plural form for the uncooked noodles.

I picked "e" mainly because you can never have too many lasagna noodles, and I love me some lasagna and with lots of noodles I can make lots of lasagna, and that is really what it's all about, right?

I didn't know the poll referred to how to spell it...

I did Robin, and even though I'm aware of the gramatically correct use of the words, I and I think many others use the form of ending in "a" all the time.

Yeah, me too. :D Except maybe in writing a recipe.

I was just trying to answer your question, though ... You asked, "Wonder where anybody ever got the idea of using an "e"?" Actually, the Italians did. It's the standard plural for feminine nouns ending in "a" in the singular.

Which raises the question: Why is "lasagna" feminine?

Mille grazie, signora!

And in the PLURAL, it is feminine (e) and masculine (i). Thus, one lasagna, many lasagne.
