Boston restaurants

by Danielle D » Thu Jan 15, 2009 5:20 pm

I'm planning a surprise trip to Boston for my husband's birthday and am looking for restaurant suggestions/ideas. We're up for hole-in-the-wall as well as 5-star places. I definitely want some seafood while we're there! Thanks.

Was in Boston last Thanksgiving. Stayed at the Westin Copley and liked a place called "Papa Razzi" very near the hotel. Very good. Liked it so much we ate there 3 nights. Mostly Italian dishes but have other items too.

Danielle,
My husband went to law school in Boston and we have gone back many times since and here are some of my favorites. I would suggest the Newbury Street area in the Back Bay. Most of these places will be pretty pricey. Steakhouses around there are Abe & Louis, Capitol Grille (mini chain), and Grill 23 & Bar along with the other usual chains (Ruth's Chris, Morton's, Palm, etc...). There are hipster places like Sonsie, Stephanes on Newbury, Vox Populi (more of lounge than a restaurant), and Ciao Bella (Italian... I dont think its great but I always see athletes in there when I go). As for seafood, you can always go to Legal Seafoods (chain but started here. I would go to the one on the pier), and Skipjacks (mini chain, none outside MA), or Summer Shack (another mini chain). If you are going in the summer, I would go to the Barking Crab. It's just a "clam shack" but its great! If you want more Bardstown Rd like restaurants, I would hit the South End of Boston (not to be confused with Southie). The South End has garnered a reputation for its growing restaurant scene where you will find more eclectic choices. As for holes in the wall, there are so many that its hard to start with those. All the places I mentioned should be a good start. I think you can google any one of them and get their website. If you have any other questions, please feel free to PM me. Have fun!

I don't have any restaurant recommendations per se as I haven't been to Boston in about 8 years, but if you like cannoli, you can get what is arguably the best cannoli in the world at the Modern Pastry Shop in the North End.

I'm no cannoli expert, but I used to live around the corner from this place in Brooklyn, so perhaps that helps.
