HOLY COW! Disaster at Meridian Cafe today

by Linda C » Thu Jan 15, 2009 12:03 am

I don't want to spread bad info , but my Mom was at Meridian Cafe today. Evidently, some elderly woman lost her balance and fell into a server with a full tray. She fell through the front window onto the lawn. Luckily, there was a doctor and nurse present and they helped her until EMS showed up. The server evidently hasd a laceration of the arm, but no further info was available. My prayers go out to the entire staff. We love the cafe and hope nothing serious occured.

Yes it is true, Plate glass window 0 Katie 1!

Katie is okay. It was a horrible and freaky scene. Yes an elderly woman lost her balance by missing a step, and knocked poor Katie clear through our plate glass window! She could have been killed. Katie was very lucky, and the elderly woman was lucky that Katie was there. The woman might not have been so lucky had SHE gone through. Katie received lacerations in a couple of places that required stitches! She showed up at Meridian after her ambulance ride and stitch session proclaiming she will be back to work on Friday. Not to mention apologizing for the window!
jeez.

13 years and never a spill.... today was the day! all the signs on the walls (had there been some) could not have kept that woman from missing that step.

Meridian has grown, and become popular over the past 2 1/2 years, and it is small ,so people are always dancing around each other.
We would love to have a real restaurant space when we grow up!

Thanks for posting this, writing about it really helps, I do not know what I would have done if Katie had been seriously hurt.

Thank G-d she wasn't

BTW, the elderly woman and her daughter are also fine. Thank G-d

Heather, My Mom had a great meal. She was so shocked about this and what a freaky thing! Honestly. Have you considered taling over the space which was Bazo's? We had hoped that the Thai restaurant would, but I'm thinking that there are slumlords over there.

Too much space at Wallace and all the crap that Bloom's has endured,

Anyway, we will continue to be regulars at Meridian!

I'm big (Big!) into ambiance when it comes to dining out. Meridian's food matches it's space and the space seems to match the food. In turn, I could never think of it being in a "real restaurant space" - whatever that is. I'm not one to use the "don't change" argument, but I have to say I think the "old house" approach is perfect*. Then again, I don't pay the insurance premiums.

Glad everything worked out OK.

* Going to Meridian reminds me of some of the intimate lunch places in Yellow Springs, OH, a favorite spot from my college days.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Whoa, so sorry to hear about this for all concerned ... Heather, thanks for an outstanding response and well-told story.

I'm with those who say the atmosphere of Meridian is so cozy that it would be really hard to replicate in a more commercial space. Wish you success, though, in whatever you do.

I have to say that food at Meridian is wonderful, and my daughter and I absolutely love the charming location . . . reminds us of similar places in our hometowns of Kirkwood/Webster Groves, Missouri. I think the "old house" is part of what makes it unique and special, but of course, mostly we want you to have a successful restaurant, so even if you must move someday, we'll still come and eat!

Heather, my lunch there on Wednesday was outstanding. You and Mike have certainly grown Meridian into a wonderful spot and I have enjoyed watching (and eating) during this evolution.

Well, Katie came back to work today, and it is if nothing had ever happened. When I saw her I immediately gave her a hug and told her she will get one every time I greet her from now on. We might joke about it now, but you realize how important people are to you when you realize that things could go REALLY REALLY wrong. Not because she is a devoted employee, because she is a good person, and a friend.

I think the paperwork, and phone calls she has to endure is worse than the stitches she received, I can tell you that!

The glass is back in the window too. Thanks to Stanley Shultz (spell check) glass for the efficient, helpful, and supportive job they did for us as well.

I've heard of the "Blue Plate special"..... but the "Plate glass special" is a new one!

" The woman came in, and wanted the "order to go"!

" I would like to place an order for "Carry out"

Sorry, these are the silly little jokes I came up with to keep me from losing it completely.

It has been a week of Miracles, and I am a grateful individual.

Have a good weekend !

What a pane in the glass.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.
