Small Times Bakery has them. They're on Richland Ave.

Bialys are great! Growing up in Louisville, I'd never even heard of 'em until I went to New York. But man are they excellent!

Speaking of bagels and bialys, I recently bought some Shuckman's herb & garlic and bourbon smoked salmon spreads, and both were really tasty.

xpost -- Small Times is another place that's kinda too far out to get to often, but hopefully someday I'll get to try their wares.

I don't have a car, and TARC is crap misspelled (except with a t instead of a p).

Frankly, this is a bit off-topic, but Louisville could use a little less emphasis on cars and a bit more on walking, biking, and sustainable public transportation... just like Brooklyn!

Whole foods also has bialys- not great ones but better than nothing. I brought a dozen back from the city in Oct and froze them, but the holidays diminished them to nothing

What Dooley's are still open? I know the one in Middletown closed as did the one on Hurstborne in I believe the one downtown changed to something else.

I've been screaming light rail that runs at least from downtown to the Highlands, Crescent Hill, and Old Louisville for years.

You were just born about 50 years too late. This is Bardstown Road in The Highlands a few years ago, my friend  :

Oh wow - that's Bardstown and Bonnycastle - I live on Bonnycastle. Amazing picture, Jay, and thanks.

A friend of mine has that very nice Highlands photo book with the greyish cover - lots of good pictures. I was told that the original reason for the turnabout on Cherokee was so the trolly could turn around.

It would be an absolute blast if they put that back in somehow.

That is a great picture. John and I recently bought a framed print at Great Escape that is a photo collage of about a hundred storefronts in the Highlands (fairly recent, I'd say the pictures were taken in the last couple years). We have no idea who did the compilation, but we love that thing!

While Dooly's bialies aren't bad, my personal suggestion is to try making your own! Unlike bagels, they are not first boiled in either a sugar/malt (if you're from Montreal) or various other water-based solutions, which makes them relatively easy.

I don't know if it's the boiling or what, but bagels tend to last 24 hours or so before going stale, but I've found home-made bialies fresh out of the oven are significantly better than any of the others I've found in Louisville (and I wonder if it's because they tend to sit out more, as people aren't aware of them and don't buy as often, and lose their freshness).

Good catch! I didn't pick up on the cross street. Here's a link to Google street view of the same spot today. That's de la Torres on the right and the streetcar (light rail, if you will) has been replaced by a Hummer

Today's view

Also, the Douglass Loop was as you describe the Cherokee turnabout - the streetcar/trolley/light rail "looped" around The Loop to begin its return trip down Bardstown Road. The Trolley Hop trolley does the same thing. It's always been a good idea.
