All of our staff are instructed to give money in a robbery situation. And to cooperate fully. We have a panic button, and the local police dispatch number (they are three blocks away). Give the money and let the police take over. The safety of my staff is ABSOLUTE top priority.(heck, my wife and I both work behind the counter too)
I'm glad the man lived. Killing someone for a few hundred bucks isn't ok in my book, whether it is a robber killing a shopkeep, or a shopkeep killing a robber. Hopefully, he'll turn around his life while in prison. But, it might just end up him suing the establishment and making some lawyers rich.
On that note, I have had one staff member at Rays who has a concealed/carry license, and I really wouldn't have wanted to be the poor guy who decides to rob us on one of those days he is working. I doubt my guy would use the weapon, unless necessary, but what are these people thinking when they try to rob stores? Really, they're not thinking, and most of them are simply drug addicts who need their next "fix."
It does suck when this kind of stuff happens. I'm very glad everyone in the establishment is ok! Very glad.
