Porcini

by Bradley W » Sun Jan 11, 2009 4:53 pm

My wife and I had dinner at Porcini last night for the first time and enjoyed it very much. We started with an order of calamari which I would say was just average - lightly fried, served with a spicy, thin marinara. Don’t get me wrong, we polished of the large portion with no problem or complaint. Just not very memorable. In hindsight I wish we had ordered the mushroom bruschetta (next time).

For entrees my wife had the grilled jumbo shrimp with vegetable risotto and I had linguini vongole with white clam sauce. These were both very good. First the shrimp with risotto - the shrimp were huge and there were 6 or 7 which made for a good sized portion. They were grilled with a tasty black char on the edges. The risotto had a nice lemony bite to it. The linguine is my “go to” dish when trying a new Italian place and this definitely passed muster.

Attentive but not intrusive service from start to finish from our server Sean. Finished off with a solid tiramisu and with a glass of wine each, we thought it was very reasonable $80 plus $20 tip. With my budget, $100 dinners are for special occasions, but this was (wife's birthday) and we very satisfied. We’ve been to Volare once and thought this was right in that same league.

Business looked strong. We arrived shortly after 6:00 and there were plenty of tables available, but by the time we left it was a packed house. Sure, it was a Saturday night, but still good to see.

Brad, thanks for an excellent entry post - a fine review! Also, welcome to the forum ... glad we finally got that access issue straightened out.

We live near Porcini, and one of the few things that makes me feel better about the current national recession is that it, and many (most?) of the other Frankfort landmarks seem to be continuing to look full or even slammed, not just on weekends but week nights. We were in Caffe Classico this afternoon and every table was full with maybe a short wait, and a lot of people were ordering food, not just coffee and pastries.

Nice review-
I tried this place once, several years ago.
We arrived and were told a 30 minute wait, but watched for almost 1.5 hours as several "regulars" came in after us and were seated before us with a handshake, a wink and a weak and sad grin in our direction.
When we were finally seated, they tacitly admitted that we were shoved aside by offering a comped app.
We declined the app... had a delicious meal... and never returned.
We are "regulars" and even friends and relatives to the owners at other fine spots in town, but never expect any preferential treatment other than the server knowing us by name and offering our preferred before-dinner-drink preferences from memory.
I'm probably guilty of holding a grudge...but if there's one thing that burns my biscuits more than anything else, it's being treated as a second class citizen.
Maybe I should give them a second chance, but for now I'm am complacent with the other fine venues in town where I feel more welcome.

If you waited for an hour and a half, you have the patience of Job.
