Forum Member's Byline in CJ Today

My version of today's CJ Neighborhoods section included a series of articles under the headline "What You Love About Your Neighborhood". Forum member Jesse Hendrix-Inman penned the piece on her beloved Schnitzelburg. She's a recent transplant to the 'hood. I especially liked the last paragraph:

...It is a place where your neighbor will reach over the fence to share a harvest of heirloom tomatoes. It is a place where the community gets together once per year to vote on the No. 1 Citizen, someone who deserves recognition for contributions to the neighborhood. It is a place where you can taste history in a Check's hamburger or a Mazzoni's rolled oyster. Schnitzelburg is a place where neighbors are proud of their heritage, and they don't mind sharing it with newcomers.

Way to go, Jesse!

I love Schnitzelburg, too, and one day I'm going to actually remember the date(s) of the Schnitzelburg Walk and attend. Last week, we lunched at Check's and walked across the street to the newish(?) bar in the "old Heintzman's bakery" for a beer.

I was going to post about this article tonite- you beat me to it Jay.
I wish I knew that area better, it is the black hole of the ville to me- I get so very, very lost anytime I venture there. I'll keep trying though. Jesse, you made it sound so very inviting.

John & I used to live in Schnitzelburg - it's a neighborhood in transition; some blocks are getting better, we just happened to live in one that was going the other direction, but we've definitely never ruled out moving back some day. It's really handy to downtown and 2/3 the price of the Highlands for rent.

Nice job, Jesse!

Thanks! Any of y'all are welcome to look me up next time you venture this way. I'm a new member of the Communiy Council and since I have a background in writing and PR, I'm putting in some volunteer work to try to get the word out about the great things that the neighborhood has to offer.

Hm, there's a little shotgun across the street from me that's for rent. The window says one bedroom, $525/month. Not sure about a basement, but I doubt it has one as most of those old shotguns only have a cellar.

Probably hard to find a "modern" basement in the area. Older house in general seldom had basements .. only cellars. Also most of Germantown was built on swampy land so the water table is high.
