Westport General Store

by Susanne Smith » Mon Jan 05, 2009 6:52 pm

I'm a little late and ashamed not to have said something sooner, but we just had ( several weeks ago) the most wonderful meal at the Westport General Store. Will and his wife were wonderful hosts as we enjoyed the upscale country cooking that I love so much. I had the Bison Ribeye which was full flavored, tender, and cooked perfectly. Fried green tomatoes, greens, and potatoes, were the bomb! Please make the effort to get out that way. I been making the drive for almost fourty years, so it doesnt seem like a stretch to me, but just a nice drive into the beginning of the country. I would venture to say it is only a wee bit futher than the South end drive for those of us in the east end, and a crackling woodstove awaits you on arrival. Thank you Will and best to you in this new year.

Susanne,
Thanks for the kind words. Ruth and I always enjoy seeing you and Bill. I'm glad you liked the bison. I hope to see you soon, as I've got a nice load of Cherry wood for the stove. It smells great.

I'm coming in with my family for my birthday dinner next week! I've got a Louisville Original GC burning a hole in my pocket. Can't wait!

Finally made it in to Westport General Store last night! (Snow and ice derailed my earlier plans)

I got to meet Will, the perfect host, and we enjoyed the shrimp and grits with red eye gravy, the bison tenderloin and the mussels. The highlight of the meal for me was the mussels-wonderful fresh shellfish in a garlicky broth with corn and tomatoes (I was pleased with the use of canned tomatoes, preserved at the peak of ripeness, rather than mealy winter tomatoes).

I recently tried the mussels at Molly Malone's, where I love the fried fish, but the mussels were awful-they didn't even de-beard them! So it was such a treat to find someone who is doing them right.

Also, the drive out there is easy! I even met a server there who lives a few houses down from me and makes the drive each day! It's also a beautiful escape from the city.
