Free Coffee, for you folks only

by Nimbus Couzin » Sun Jan 04, 2009 4:22 am

Hey all,

I'm offering FREE french pressed coffee to members of the Louisville Restaurants Forum, at Ray's Monkey House, 1578 Bardstown Rd (between Cumberland Brews and Cafe 360). Reference the Forum while ordering (before they ring you up). It is my way of letting ya'll try the coffee that I meticulously source from all of the best offerings available to the US, and that I then craft roast on premises.

I think you deserve to try what I consider an awesome cup of coffee...and FREE, so the price is right!

Again, this applies only to French Presses, and I hope to see ya'll soon...

-Cheers,

Nimbus

We have switched to the French Press at home and I think it's the only way to make coffee! I hope your kind offer extends to decaf also.

Of course, decaf is also an option. Nooooo problem...

Thanks to those who have already taken advantage of this offer. It is always fun to see people in "real life" materialize out of an internet forum.

Cheers, and please feel free to stop by everyone! I have some medium roasted Guatamalan and some dark roast Ethiopian Sidamo Korate right now, just waiting to be enjoyed.....

I just came home from a very nice evening at Ray's. It was my first time, and I am only a little ashamed to admit that it took the free coffee to get me in there. I'm not a coffee drinker by any stretch, but when someone extends the olive branch, I figure why not grab it and see what shakes out.

The medium roast French Press was exceptional, and quite strong. I wanted a scone to take some of the edge off. (as I admitted, I'm not a coffee pro) What really impressed me, however, was the place itself. Ray's is a very bright and fun place. With comfortable couches and a diverse use of space, there is a place for every kind of patron. I generally get nervous when a place is billed as "kid-friendly," mainly because of my own prejudicial fear of screaming, out of control children run amok. I was pleased to see that this was not the case at Ray's. (There is even a beautiful sign cautioning that "Children left unattended will receive a double shot of espresso and a puppy." Hilarious.) Ray's is great and I look forward to future visits. (They even show movies on Monday nights upstairs with the big comfy couches!)

I wish it didn't take free stuff to lure me into stuff, sometimes, but I'm certainly glad I stopped into Ray's.

Thank you, Nimbus, for extending the branch!

It's really a fantastic place. I live close by and have ponied up to a comfortable little round table in the front window several times now, while posting on HB, surfing the web for free, etc... The coffee is strong and the stir-ins are all organic (yes - I adulterate my java). He's so conscientious of the environment, civic duties, parental compromise, great beer list, interesting things to read all over the walls, bathrooms clean, atmosphere ecclectic... I could go on. I had his mock meat vegetable soup, available at 9am, and it was outstanding. Props, Nimbus.

Stopped by Ray's Monkey House for the first time last week for a mocha...Excellent coffee in a laid back eclectic atmosphere...There is just something about a coffee place that has it's own roaster, especially a roaster that is visible to the public eye...

BTW Nimbus...I am just a little curious how you came up with the name Ray's Monkey House?...Enquiring minds want to know...

Stopped in yesterday for a couple of espressos. Forgot all about the free offer. Doesn't matter. The espressos were a great pick-me-up on an icky, wet day. Question. I saw that you are having a regular weekly bluegrass jam (cannot remember which night now). Are you getting a good crowd?

Thank you for coming by! And thanks for the compliments. Glad you liked our little old place. As some of you know, we are where Twice Told Books used to be, and it was quite a job to replace the floors, ceilings and walls, plus electrical and plumbing, and add bathrooms. We've tried to make it cozy. The kids are generally only there in the mornings, and it is big enough that one can usually avoid them entirely, if desired. Adding Beer and Wine is one of our steps to make the place "less kid-friendly." We really are hitting our groove as a true Community Gathering Place.

Cheers! (p.s. I'm working on monthly movie night schedules, so maybe I'll post one here when I get this month's done - tomorrow??)

Thanks Jackie! I like the front window table too....Glad you liked the vegetable soup. It has seitan for the mock meat, with potatoes, white beans (Cannelli or Great northern), plus lotsa onion, garlic, green beans, cauliflower, corn, and we use tomato paste in our veggie broth. Pretty hearty. I'm toying with making our own french bread to go with it! If only there were more hours in the day...but I REALLY want to.
Cheers,
-Nimbus

p.s. I've seen some pretty gnarly bathrooms on Bardstown Rd, and we do try to keep ours clean. Glad they were up to your standards.

The short story is that my big kid's middle name is Ray. He was there helping me load books into boxes from the start. He was four at the time and now he's six.

And my brother and I sort of developed a monkey philosophy a while back. It basically centers on being silly rather than too serious. Every six pack I printed at my old Brewery in Tucson (Nimbus Brewing Co.) had the monkey philosophy on the bottom : "humans are too serious. monkeys like to run, jump, and play. I believe humans would benefit from being more monkeylike."

The longer story is why his middle name is Ray. I'll have to tell ya' that one in person....plus, some of our monkey antics while hitching through Europe.

Cheers,-

Glad you liked the espressos!

Our Bluegrass Jam is every Tues night, and it has been going REALLY well. Usually about 8-10 or so players at any given moment (people come and go), and lots of people who just come out to listen and watch. We've had nights with 15-20 players and they split into two different groups, one up in the front room. We get some very very talented musicians (amazing), and also some beginners. The people are laid back, and welcome anyone who wants to sit in. They love the couches, atmosphere, etc...

Shew - you're right about that. I am a big fan of the Cumberland Brews facilities though - the wall of beer cans in the downstairs room and the bath tub/shower combo upstairs are interesting.
