Today's CJ: A rave for Maido but no fourth star

by Robin Garr » Sat Jan 03, 2009 1:01 pm

Okay, continuing my new commitment to at least acknowledge the CJ's Saturday review if not award them a live link, Marty penned a love song to Maido today (a sentiment that I fully share, by the way), appropriately acknowledged that he's known there, and was given a remarkable 839 words by his editors - longest Scene review for many years - and ended up giving them 3 1/2 stars, providing further support for the theory that the CJ simply will not permit a four-star rating for an ethnic restaurant or any eatery that does not boast white tablecloths and a posh scene.

Still, it''s a strong positive for Maido, one of Louisville's hidden gems and one of my favorite restaurants in town. (For the record, my Oct. 17, 2007 review used 1148 words and awarded 92 points, the equivalent of four stars. See how much easier it is when you use a more granular rating system? ;)

I personally don't care for quantitative scores be it stars, a letter grade, or a numerical score. I prefer to read the "meat" (no pun intended) of the review. It's no different than The Wine Spectator scoring wines which I think is silly.

Amen Robin! When will this town (and media) wake up to realize the quality and variety of cuisine Louisville offers is quite honestly an anomaly when compared to other cities of similar size. Don't get me wrong, I love the white tablecloth places too. But there should be credit given for places that offer more than steak and potatoes.

Maido always deserves four stars, no doubt
