searching for new york style pizza

by Paula B » Thu Jan 01, 2009 3:39 pm

Help! Our favorite pizza place, Slice of NY , is closed- as is the deli in crestwood that had good pizza. Does anyone have any suggestions of any places that are open, that have New York style pizza? We are desperate.

Luigi's, West Main near Sixth, pretty much next door to Proof. They've got the pizza, they've even got the attitude!

Typically open mostly business hours on weekdays, though, don't plan dinner there.

Also, Spinelli's on Baxter calls itself "Philly-style" but it's really essentially NYC pie, plus cheesesteaks as an intriguing option. Open very late; again, very casual and informal, lots of tattoos and piercings for your entertainment. ;)

Added: Over in Jeff, J Train has a great NYC name and is decorated with pictures of the Brooklyn subways, but I did not find the pizza particularly authentic. Nice little place, though, pleasant atmosphere.

I second Spinellis! I wish they would open the Goose Creek location already!

It is a shame that the Pizza place in J-town closed (can't remember the name) Hometown? Next to Spinelli's they had the closest thing to a NY pie

There appears to be some activity in the old Hero's location in the heart of Jeffersontown....

It looks like the new place will be called Jimmy V's...

Looking forward to trying it, I really miss Hero's!

Heros was the name of that place.

annemarie m wrote:hi paula, have you tried fraschelli's new york deli and pizzeria in crestwood? the people that own it are from brooklyn, n.y and he makes a thin style new york pizza. they are at 6010 crestwood station, 243-9005. they have 3 sizes med. large, jumbo. the large is 18 inches and $14.00. by the way i used to live in bridgemore estates. annemarie.

I need to get back to Fraschelli's and give it another try, Annemarie. When it was new, we drove way out there a couple of times, lured by the possibility of NYC pizza, and were pretty disappointed. It seemed like they were trying to make a NYC pie the way they thought Kentuckians would want it. Was it like Grand Avenue Pizza or Rizzo's on Steinway in Astoria, Queens? It was not. Geddadaheah! :D

annemarie m wrote:robin, i know fraschelli's moved in the same strip center next to chase bank. much nicer than the old place for sure. he remolded the whole place. they now have a full service bar. i grew up eating lombardi's pizza in little italy. they are the oldest pizzeria in n.y.c. i have had pizza in queens. but that was a long time ago. i've sent many new yorkers and jersey people over, they seem to like it. i still prefer spinelli's or sparro's for new york style pizza. supposely a new york pizza place is supposed to open in norton commons. the owners are from staten island i think. i haven't heard anymore on this. i like luigi's been in there and spoken with him in italian. just too far out for an east ender. and your right he has an attidude.

Plus, Fraschelli's is the closest thing to getting deli in Oldham County.....

Dear Annemarie,

Small world! hope you are doing great. I thought the crestwood place closed, we will have to try looking for it again. On NewYears Day we ended up going to Spinelli's. It was loads better than the delivery choices we have, will try Luigi's next time I am downtown. I just miss the guys in plainview. The business is for sale, fyi, if anyone wants to reopen it.

Thank you for the suggestions. :D

I know it doesn't really help, but the best pie NYC style I've ever had was in San Antonio Texas. It was at the riverwalk, I don't recall the name of the place, but I have never forgotten that pizza. When I was on weekend leave, I would go there every time. You could hold the pizza by the crust, none of the toppings would fall off. Then when you folded it and bit into it... let's just say it was a slice of heaven. Apparently, I need to pack up and try this Spinelli's and the other ones suggested. They do have traditional toppings, like pepperoni, cheese, italian sausage, etc..?

Being from Brooklyn, I feel that Luigi's and Frascelli's are the closest to my hometown. Luigi's certainly has the attitude and the heritage. Actually so does Frascelli's (though he's from Newark)...Frascelli's has really upgarded their digs.

Paula,

Thanks for the kind words about our pizza (Slice of NY). If I had a pizza oven at the house, I’d have you over for some pie.

I’m a Long Island girl, and in my opinion, Luigi’s is the best NY style pizza in the area. Try it, you’ll like it.

They’ve been closed for the holidays, but will reopen this Monday (1/12).

I'm not sure if it would be considered NY style, but J*Train in Jeffersonville has great pizza.
