What traditional lucky new years dish will you be eating?

by Bert Baker » Wed Dec 31, 2008 12:37 pm

Just to cover all the bases, I am thinking i will do pomegranate-marinated filet of snapper wrapped in cabbage atop a bed of unbroken soba noodles tossed with red lentils and Hoppin' John.
I need all the luck I can get!

A rather grand, flamboyant friend told me years ago that you should eat caviar on New Years- every egg you eat represents the money you will make in the coming year. So, of course, being rather grand myself that is what I have done for the past 25 years. Went to the international market yesterday to pick up my salmon caviar. Goes very well with a baked potato and sour cream.

We were at Kroger today, and when I noticed the woman in front of us in line had black-eyed peas, I asked Mary if she didn't want some. She shrugged. I was just as glad. I don't like black-eyed peas one bit.

I think we might cook something good and open a nice bottle of wine tomorrow night (and Prosecco for a romantic little taste of bubbly for two tonight). But food traditions? Nah.

Actually, I don't either! But, I have a recipe that came from a restaurant where I used to play in a band (that ultimately became The Kentucky Headhunters) more than 25 years ago, so I have to reminisce a bit by making HJ.

Advil represents the 6th food group in our household.

New Years Day is corned beef and cabbage with black eye peas.

Not altogether food related, but an interesting overview of the world's fun traditions. I've been looking for yellow skivvies all day.
