You are welcome.

As I have laid in bed today recovering from an illness, the one question floating through my mind has been "Who exactly does go to 4SL?"

I go once a year, for the Derby pill pull, and I try to do significant penance for this sin by donating extra dollars to local businesses.

I go out to 4th Street about 4 or 5 times a year and I don't feel bad about it. Mostly, when I feel like going out and making a fool out of myself on the dance floor.

Whenever I go see something at the Palace I generally park on 5th and walk over to 4th Street Live and get lunch or dinner, and hit the Borders if I've got time to kill before the show. I figure it's either that or hit the stripclubs over by the palace, and those two or three by the palace have always looked seedy.

That being said, a fair number of the nurses I've worked with have gone down to 4SL quite a bit. All late 20s or early 30s, so I guess it draws a moderate amount of local crowd down there for various things.

Where to Buy Groceries - ValuMarket, Creation Gardens (support local businesses!)
Free Things to Do - the fantastic parks in Louisville
Where to Meet People - don't care
Where Young Couples Go - don't care
Where to Get a Beer - the Nachbar, Derby City Espresso, Cumberland Brews, BBC Tap Room, New Albanian, the Monkeywrench
Where to get a Late Night Bite - the Bristol
Where to get a Latte - forget lattes, get an espresso at Derby City Espresso
Outdoorsy Thing to Do - Otter Creek Park (pre-Jerry shutdown), Bernheim Forest, Jefferson Memorial Forest
Where to Take Fido - see also: parks, the dog run in Cherokee Park (not free though)
Where to Dance - tough one, maybe Connections or Fuzion?
Thing to Do with the Kids - don't care
Funky Local Businesses - if by "funky" you mean tacky places with ugly early 1990s fonts and logos, there's too many places like that in Louisville already, I shouldn't have to name them. Even the freakin' Louisville Water Company building on Frankfort has an ugly sign with squiggly lines and a dated "funky" font on it. Enough! That goes for those of you who send emails with the comic sans typeface, too.
Best View of the City - the Quonset Hut (r.i.p.), that park over on the Indiana side
(Feel free to add more)

What Only Locals Know:
insider secrets, local lingo and slang, best-kept secrets, etc. - if these are given away, they're no longer secrets, are they?

Also as far as karaoke goes, I hate Fourth Street Live, but a couple weeks ago I went to Full Contact Karoake at some horrible bar there, where you can sing backed by a live band. The band were cornballs, but clearly knew their stuff and could rock out full-on. I sang Ozzy's "Crazy Train" and something else I'm forgetting (y'know, booze does that). It was pretty rad and I'd probably go back to 4SL just for that (but nothing else, unless, say, Roy Ayers plays there for free again or something).

Gotta' chime in here.

Where to Buy Groceries - Lotsa Pasta
Free Things to Do - My favorite used to be walking around the reservoir in Crescent Hill. :-(
Where to Meet People - anywhere. Just walk up and down Bardstown Rd.
Where Young Couples Go - ?? I'm old.
Where to Get a Beer - my garage.
Where to get a Late Night Bite - the Porcelain Palace. Just kidding.....maybe.... How about Spring Street?
Where to get a Latte - Java Brewing Co.
Outdoorsy Thing to Do - Cherokee Park.... just start walking. Or go sledding on Barringer Hill.
Where to Take Fido - the kennel. Dogs are a pain to go anywhere with.
Where to Dance - Connection
Thing to Do with the Kids - the kennel. Kids are a pain to go anywhere with.
Funky Local Businesses - Why Louisville store, Book and Music Exchange, almost everything on B-town or F-fort.
Best View of the City - from an airliner heading into Standiford. It's always good to be home.
(Feel free to add more)

What Only Locals Know:
insider secrets, local lingo and slang, best-kept secrets, etc. - Big Rock; Where were Bacon's, Stewarts and Shillitos?; the Grisantis; Butchertown Pub on Friday; Standiford Field, Thornberry's Toys;
I guess that wasn't a locals-only list, but more of a sad, lame list of places that aren't around anymore. Like I said....old.

Thanks to all ... I've filed my story, and did pick some of your good ideas for use. I don't need any more for my project, but please feel free to keep the responses coming if you like. This is a fun topic!
