Shrimp and Grits throw down

by Steve Bryant » Sat Dec 27, 2008 9:25 pm

Was anybody serious about having a shrimp and grit throw down after the first of the year. If so, let's start planning. I wish we could do it as a fundraiser. Maybe we could find a centrally located place to have it. Most everything could be prepared off site. Entries would need to provide a 4" deep full size s/s insert of their recipe that could be sold to the public by the plate. These proceeds would go to what ever fund we decided to support. My suggestion would be for all contestants to prepare a bowl of their recipe with a number on the bottom of the bowl. The judges would have to taste each entry and start eleminating bowls. When they get down to the last three, they would have to determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Then the numbers on the bottom of the bowl would reveal the winners. We would need trophys for all three places. It sounds like a lot of fun to me. Judges would need to be carefully selected. I think we might be able to get some help from our supplier as far as paper goods are concerned. What are your feelings.

Aye on the throwdown part. I'm not familiar enough with the law of charities, selling food to the public and the hoops that would need to be jumped through to comment on the rest. If it a just for a good time offline then I have just the place in mind, but it couldn't be used for charging the public even for a charity event.

If its raising money for a good charity, why not do what the "crooks" do and simply "ask for a donation". I think that would get you through and around the legal hoops and loops.

Sounds like a great idea!....
I would love to come and participate, I'm quite fond of the dish, and think my version would stand up to the best of them!

All we really need is the location(as you suggested the entries are probably better prepared off site);
A few impartial judges with a standard of criteria(UMMM...I'm pretty sure we could find more than a few of these),
And a charity to donate to(there are many out there).

I would suggest a simple $5.00 cover or..um excuse.me "donation" to all who would like to attend and be able to sample.

Perhaps make enough for the judges and for about 50 or so 3oz. samples.

I would also like to add a "Peoples Choice" award.

With enough planning this could be quite the event!

We are in. The charity idea sounds great. My cause is Autism. I am checking to see if we could benefit Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT) They are now located at the Home for the Innocents. But any charity is great.

I'm sure that Justin Mcmillan, our chef at the Windsor, would be more than happy to join in. I'll talk to him about it today. We always have some kind of Shrimp and Grits on our menu, anyway.

I would be down for attending this, but only as a member of the public. Five or ten bucks donation is not too big a deal for some samples of shrimp and grits.

I am in the process of locating a place. I would like to find a location that would be centrally located so no one has a long haul. It also needs to be in a familiar area so people will be able to find it. In the month of January there shouldn't be any problem finding a good place. I don't think there will be a lot of events going on during that time. It would need to be at the end of the month so it can be promoted by radio and tv. I think the organization that we donate the proceeds to should be a local one so please give me some suggestions. I think there should be three judges and at least one of them should be a popular radio DJ or a well known weather man. A local celebrity of some kind. I know none since I'm not from here so suggestions would be helpful there too. Someone said they think we should have a peoples award. Here's what I have in mind. We could sell tickets to the public for $5.00. This could be done at restaurants that will be competeing in the throw down. The radio and tv could let the public know where to get their tickets and we could also sell them at the door. All contestants would be required to supply a full size 4" deep s/s insert of their recipe to be served to the public. The inserts will have numbers on them. On their tickets they can write down what number they like the best and then drop their ticket in a jar. Before the public samples, each contestant fixes a bowl of their recipe for the judges and on the bottom of the bowl will be that contestants number. The bowls should be taken to the judges table by someone other than the contestant. The judges should do the tasting at that time selecting a winner then looking at the number on the bottom. We could have two winners. The peoples choice and the judges choice.
I've done sone of these things before and usually Pepsi or Coke are willing to provide soft drinks. I feel sure our venders would help us with plastic spoons napkins and foam bowls. We could call it The First Annual Shrimp & Grits Throw Down of Louisville.

Well Lambert & Lindsey was voted to be the most popular morning radio show for this town, I'm pretty sure George Lindsey loves this sort of thing (plus they are big on the whole charity deal). I can shoot him an email and see what he thinks! As and added bonus for it being towards a good cause (has that been settled yet? I do like autism as a focus and I must say that as I have been on their medical unit at HOI many times on the job, those are some amazing people! I've actually been trying to get a better schedule to hopefully volunteer for them because of how impressed I am) Lambert and Lindsey could very well mention it on their show...the 36 hour request-a-thon they do every year for Make a Wish more than shows what big hearts they have.
