Margarita Questions

by JustinHammond » Sat Dec 27, 2008 8:42 am

Two quick questions

Does anyone know where I can find Agave Nectar? I am in the Lyndon area.

Also, what do you feel is the best value Tequila on the market?

I've regularly been able to find Agave Nectar in most reputable health food stores. I think I have seen it at the local Kroger here in Clarksville as well

As for value tequila, it all depends on your tastes. If you are looking for a good "mixto" tequila (not 100% Agave) check out El Jimador. I prefer the reposado in this line over the blanco or the anejo. If you want to step up a bit and go for a true 100% Agave tequila, Cazadores and Corralejo are two brands that jump out to me. Both retail around the $31 - $33 range and have much more character (IMO) than Patron. If you really want to take a step up, there is a brand called Cielo. They age their tequila in sherry casks (at least for the reposado and anejo) and it imparts a velvety smoothness to the tequila that is outstanding. We retail them for right around the same price as Patron ($49.99 for the reposado and $52.99 for the anejo)

I'll be using the tequila for "true" margaritas; tequila, agave nectar, and lime juice only.

I found nectar at World Market this morning.

A good, smooth, clean finish everyday home tequila is Sauza Blanco. Do not let the price tag fool you, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Ed, Sauza is what I'm currently drinking and I agree it is tasty. I am just looking to step it up a bit. I guess I just need to go to a tasting and see if I can tell a difference.

If you're going for an authentic margarita (just tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur), I would strongly suggest Chinaco Tequila. It is arguably the best tequila on the market today. The blanco would probably fit your authentic margarita best. I believe it's about $45.00 for 750ml.
On a side note, the lime juice in the original three-ingredient margarita came from a type of mexican limes that are significantly sweeter than even Key Limes. So I don't feel too bad about using just a splash of simple syrup. Personal taste, of course.
(And remember to serve them up! :D )
Hope this helps.
