A Christmas Poem (redux)

by Jay M. » Thu Dec 25, 2008 10:59 am

‘Twas Christmas Day in Two Thousand and Eight,
And, at Ethan’s request, my ’05 poem gets an update.

The stockings are hung by the chimney with care
In the hopes that culinary delights soon will appear.

And, last night, while I was nestled all warm and snug in my bed,
I had visions of the year’s memorable events dancing in my head.

Of course no week in our forum would be quite complete
If we didn’t engage in another chain restaurant debate.

Corbett’s opened its doors to cheers all around;
It’s a lovely place and the accolades abound.

Taco trailers appear in parking lots around town and we’re all delighted,
If only we can figure out today where they’ve alighted.

We take Eliza W.’s advice and resolve to be vocal,
Encourage your friends to dine out often and eat only local.

Offline events allow us to put a real face with a cyber name,
Let’s hope the New Year brings lots more of the same!

The topic came up again and causes quite a commotion.
Opinions on tipping stirred lots of emotion.

So, fellow forumites, as I get ready to start the big Day,
I have Holiday wishes that I’d like to send your way.

Surely you know that the New Year is not far.
I hope all your restaurant visits next year are truly 5-star!

To Stephen D.: your musings on food and drink are so inspiring,
We look forward to the new venture to which you’re aspiring.

To our pastry chefs: On Leah!, On Jessica!, On Marsha and Ethan!
May you continue to delight us - that’s what we’re beseechin’.

To our beer guys: Roger and Todd and Shawn and all the rest,
May you convince the masses to shun the Lite and seek out the best.

To Robin: May 2009 be a year of peace, joy and tranquility,
Finding the right words, the best wine and, of course, civility.

To all of you yearning for authentic local versions to treat ya:
May you have luck in your quest for real New York bagels and pizza.

And I heard Robin exclaim, if not once, maybe three times:
Merry Christmas to all……I’m gonna moderate these rhymes!!

And I heard Roger call out to all who could hear:
Merry Christmas to all! Now, drink better beer!

And I heard Michele and Ashley proclaim with all the strength they could muster:
Merry Christmas to all, we’re on to better things, but thanks for enjoying our pasta!

And I heard Ed V. sing out, which was quite a feat.
Merry Christmas to all! When do we eat!

And I heard TP announce with aplomb and great tact
Merry Christmas to all! When’s the market coming back!

And I heard Marsha and Ethan declare in a loud outburst:
Merry Christmas to all! Remember to eat dessert first!

And I heard Jay M. exclaim, and by now you know it:
Merry Christmas to all! I still suck as a poet.

Thank you for the encore edition of the poem.

Just so you know: as of September I've left the pastry world for the time being.
Not that i don't enjoy it (i really miss it!), I felt the need to brush up on my savory skills.

I'm working on versatility here.
My ambitions and dreams run pretty high these days.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

Wow, an engineer that can write poetry - what are the odds?
Great job, Jay - Happy Holidays to you and yours,

That side of my brain gets very little use. :)

Best to you and your family, too, Ward.
