Burek in Louisville?

by Maggie Roetker » Fri Dec 12, 2008 2:21 pm

Does anyone know if there is a place in Louisville that sells burek (also börek, boereg)? It is a Serbian (also Bosniann and Turkish) phyllo pastry filled with meat or spinach and feta. It can be pie-size or individual-sized - though I prefer pie.

The best I've ever had is from Old Town Restaurant in Milwaukee - would be nice if it could be obtained locally!

Slovenia too! I've had lots of burek in Ljubljana, Maggie, but never in Louisville.

I would try our Bosnian restaurants, though, as the best chance for finding the real thing - try Bosna-Mak in Buechel first, perhaps ...

Maggie,
I just bought a frozen batch of potato Bourekas (Israeli style)from Jungle Jim's (cinnci) yesterday. I did this so I can have some in a jiffy if I did not want to make them from scratch. There are times we make appetizer size for private events at Meridian. I made them for a special last week, except the other special was shrimp, and shrimp almost always trumps spinach!

I think you can check out Al Watan on Klondike lane, they may have some.

They are soooooooo easy to make if you use them with puff instead of Phyllo!

I am a little busy these days... but if you can wait till after the holidays.. I can make you a batch!

I think Jasmin Bakery European Bread (502) 458-0013 3825 Bardstown Rd in Hikes Point may have what they call cheese pie, spinach pie or meat pie. This is close to burek but more of I would think a hand-held street food version & may not be as multi-layer with phyllo as the casserole size version. You might also call Ermin's French Bakery & Cafe (502) 585-5120 455 S 4th St Ste 122 to see if they ever make burek. They cater and if they make these you might be able to order one (casserole size) from them. I too have made this at home with frozen phyllo dough and it turned out great. Good luck.

I know from personal experience that Heather's Bourekas are amazing!

I know that Hani's on Bardstown Road (right across from the Book&Music Exchange) had it before they closed down. It might be worth checking the restaurant that took over the space though, as it doesn't really look much different from the outside. Sadly, I haven't had a chance to try it yet and can't recall the name.

One more spot to check out would be the J and R Bakery. Bosn/Serb place. They are near the Kenwood Drive in. Sorry I dont have a phone number.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

This might be a bit of a long-shot, but check with the "Liquor Barn", across from Tinsletown Theatres....they have a rather extensive deli and gourmet food section, and might have what you're looking for....unless you live nearby, it might be worth a phone call first before making the drive....

It's not in Louisville, but if you needed some Borek for a special occasion or something, Bosphorus Cafe in Indianapolis serves it. I'm sure they'd be happy to do something for you.

There was a place over by Havana Rumba called Fat Bread. Is that still there?

No. It was wonderful, but it's long gone. In fact, I THINK Havana Rumba may have replaced it.

You and me both, and everybody else! It was a really nice little place, but I just don't think Bosnian cuisine is much of a draw in Louisville except right around the areas where a lot of immigrants live.
