Saturnalia at NABC begins this Friday, December 12.

by Roger A. Baylor » Tue Dec 09, 2008 10:42 am

(His name is Father Robin, and he approves this message)

Saturnalia Winter Solstice, the annual holiday draft celebration at NABC/Rich O’s/Sportstime (3312 Plaza Drive, New Albany), kicks off on Friday, December 12. As in years past, we’ve gathered dozens of special kegs of beer – some rare, some seasonal and others just festive – from America and around the world. Some of these hard-to-find beers will be appearing in draft form at Rich O’s and Sportstime Pizza for the first time ever in metropolitan Louisville.

Of all the fests we stage, this is my personal favorite, primarily because wintertime and Christmas beers reflect a broad stylistic diversity. I'm especially eager to sample the Italian contingent, all but one of which is creatively spiced. Two of these guest Italians will pour at a time, perhaps more later in the month.

The first eighteen Saturnalia selections will be on tap beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12. There are 55 beers altogether, so the lineup will continue to be replenished well into January. Always look on the blackboards to see what is on tap, and remember: Adults drink responsibly! Pricing and portion sizes vary according to alcohol content and style. During the festival’s run, information and updates will appear on these web sites:

Awesome starting line up.

One question......Does the Clipper City cask conditioned Peg Leg gain any sweetness in the firkin? I've forgotten which casked beer I tried during Gravity Head but it was a bit too sweet for my taste.

Hope to join some friends for Friday's kick off.

The JW Lees that was on cask at Gravity Head is a sweet beer before it goes in the cask. No worries about the Peg Leg being sweet.

Ditto Todd's comments, Tom. It should be bold, but balanced. Approximately 8% abv.

Thanks guys..........

If you haven't attended one of NABC events.... rev up the transportation, select a pizza lovin' DD, set the GPS or in my case the ol' hair top computer and come on over for a FABULOUS pub experience. :D

I'll be there on Saturday night.... This one is a close second to Gravity Head for my favorite event that NABC does.... and I mean a very close second.

As a savory side note, the Shangrila ale from Italy should be in stock tomorrow. It's the one with Tandoori spices, and will come on tap when one of the first two Italians depletes.

Is there a "Confederacy of Dunces" fan in the house?

You, sir, are a true scholar. I'll toast you with a beer once breakfast is finished.

My group might be coming over for lunch Friday. They had already planned a Richo's beer lunch when I sent them this info. They are very pleased. Hopefully our schedules will allow it.

I read that book in junior high. I remember marveling at the fact that there was such a thing as a "comedy novel" - and it's still a very elusive genre, IMO.
